alopecia areata and herpes
      #44986 - 11/25/02 10:51 PM

Hello,
A couple of years ago, I started noticing patches of hair on my face disappearing. Later I realized it is called Alopecia Areata. Also, I found out that I have herpes. 2 years have past since then and I feel fine, although I have been getting a kind of malaise feeling recently, maybe being around alot of sick people from work. I've been with one person for a few years now and I know she's been faithful. I'm scared to get an HIV test, although I need to know. I did get a test for liver problems when I asked the doctor about the hair loss, which came back negative. I know it's a horrible question, but what are my chances that I am infected with HIV?

As far as I know your hair loss probably has nothing to do with HIV. Herpes and HIV are 2 completely different virus. Herpes is very easy to get and 1 in 4 people have it. HIV isn't so easy and usually involves some sort of unprotected sex with a high risk partner. Not always but these are the odds. I just went through the difficult tast of getting tested after being sick twice in 4 months and guess what..I'm negative. HIV is not easy to get so just get tested to put your mind at ease.

each item you have - hairloss, herpes and hiv are all separate - none have anything to do with each other and all have different tests and symptoms.
just get tested if you want to know if you have hiv or not. there is no other way - you have 1000 different things happening to you but that will not tell you what you want and need to know.
get tested - then you can feel better. everyone here on this board thinks they may or may not have exposed themselves in some form or another - why you think you may have been exposed is another issue - get tested.
hope your herpes is in controll, this stress over hiv can cause OB's to start - take care

Thank you for your feedback concerning this matter. I plan on getting tested, but my doctor cannot see me for a few days so I am at a very high anxiety level right now. The reason I bring up the alopecia areata is because there has been some studies linking that with HIV and since the doctor was able to eliminate liver disease as a possibility, other than HIV, the only other common inducer is stress.
Also, is getting tested by my doctor a good idea? In case it does come out positive, is he required to send those results to the CDC? Am I better off getting a take- home test or going to another, more discreet place?

Try not to stress to much and do not read into any symptoms. If you get a test done by your DR and its being covered by insurance, your insuance company may ask to see the results and if they are positive your DR will have to report it to the health dept this is the case with all testing except for anonymous.

You do whatever is comfortable for you. I was tested by my DR and got my results in 3 days and it was all covered by insurance. If you want an anonymous test buy the Home Access test FDA approved for around $50. Results are also quick they come back in about 3 days.

Its caused by drinking too much coffee.
