Anyone know any other illnesses that can cause mono-like illness for 1 month, plus a week of diahrea during it? I ask because I tested negative for hiv 30 weeks after an exposure. 6 weeks after this low risk exposure, I developed all these symtoms, including rashes. I wish I could just blow this off as mono, but the diahrea and other stuff still make me think I could have hiv.
One other question, anyone know how many documented cases of hiv transmission through deep throat kissing?

Hi,
good question. i did some reaseach for myself and got some hints from others (e.g John_in_London)
here is the (short but growing) list of pathogens which may have some similarities to some ARS symtpoms:
- mononucleois
- EBV
- flu
- viral hepatits: HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HDE, HDG, TT, S-ENV
- brucella
- Generalised Yeast Infection
- CMV
- Toxplasmosis
- bateria (e.g. a H-pylori, harmless if treated) can upset the stomach and was resently diagnosed in one of my WW-friends :-)
- in cases where swolen Lymph nodes play a majar role non/Hodgkins Lymhpoma could be checked, too
For the original poster:
i did not compare the list above with the list of your symptoms, but you can ask your doc (or surf the web) for the details. If you need web-Links i can send them
get/stay well,
joe, swiss

canker sore Posted: Jan 31, 2002 I was deep kissing someone and I had a bad canker sore that was almost healed. How likely is it that I could have been infected?
HIV is not transmitted through kissing, canker sores or not. The reason for this is that HIV is not known to be transmitted through contact with saliva. The saliva of infected people contains little to no virus, and the virus that is found in saliva is often inactive (not infectious). Studies have found that a protein in saliva inactivates HIV (up to 90% of virus was inactivated in one test tube study) and other factors that may contribute to the noninfectious quality of saliva. This is why transmission through kissing or receiving oral sex doesn't seem to occur.

It isn't ARS that proves anything as far as HIV infecion. Most people with ARS are neg. Most. Years ago it was never a factor in HIV diagnosis. Its not a factor when determining HIV status. So the problems with the symptoms is they CONFUSE rather than clarify anything. Testing is the only way to determine HIV status.

And don't forget that for the vast majority of people who test negative but have symptoms similar to ARS symptoms, there is no pathogen involved at all.
