LowRisk Sex with the HighRisk and salivary glands
      #42427 - 10/26/02 12:06 PM

I have had a swollen gland in the right side of my neck, under my jaw for about FIVE months. It is not tender, and flucuates in size. The GP thought it was a submandibular lymph node; however, the ENT believes it to be my submandibular salivary gland. No other swollen masses in my body. This single gland can get quite large, and shrink, but has NEVER left. It is presistent, no tenderness, no pain. Imaging shows no signs of salivary stones. I have went on numerous courses of antibiotics including Biaxin with no results. No other symptoms. It has been five months since this low risk encounter (unproteced oral, both way, protected anal intercourse) with a person who is believed to be infected and in their later stages of the disease (AIDS) - NO cnofirmation yet though. I was Negative/Non-Reactive on ELISA through home test at 4 weeks, Negative in doctors office through blood test, ELISA, at 7-8 weeks post exposure. Non Reactive. Negative for Hepatitis A/B/C and my CBC was "beautiful" (completey normal) ..I have only a swollen salivary gland that I noticed about one week after the encounter... the fatigue is probably due to stress but is intense and comes in waves that last for days. The doctors cannot find an infection in or around the gland, no stone, no expliatnion. They are at a loss, jsut as I am. Negative for mono as well. The gland popped up right after the encounter, and was alrge at first, the size of an egg - it has resized down to about a quarter and presisted for months through the antibiotics. It will be surgically removed from the neck next Friday. What's your take on this? Are the non-reactive ELISAs from 4 and 8 weeks working in my favor? How m-u-c-h? I need a PERSONAL opinon, not professional. Appreciate it.

One swollen gland doesn't make for HIV infection. Anything and everything can cause glands to swell up and we aren't even talking about a lymph node anyway.

Your last test was at 8 weeks post exposure. Why didn't you follow through and get a final test at 12 weeks.

Since you had a negative at 8 weeks the chances are extremely good that the final test you need to take will also be negative.

Apprecaite it, I'm jsut seeking reassurance. Salivary glands swell in the presence of infection - and they're extremely common in HIV infection. Extremely. It's said they mainly swell in these settings.

Bacterial infection (my antibiotics didn't help)
Viral infection (Mumps, HIV)
Stones
Tumor
and ocasionally Diabetes

I haven't gotten ballsy enough to take my final test yet, each time I have taken my ELISAs, my endurance has been tested to the breaking point. They will see whats wrong with the gland when they remove it next Friday, I'm just worried about what they'll find. Heh. Five months now - sigh.

a 8 week non reactive means you are neg. if you had a indeteminate 8 week there would be a chance of it turning poz, but not a non reactive.

Thanks - you two have made me feel better. I have OCD - I try to hide it - but it bleeds through. I guess I'll let it bleed, test, accept it, and move on. Maybe. Heh. I would of walked off sooner had it not been for this mysterious, presistent, large gland. Damn details.
