My first post
      #42404 - 10/26/02 07:09 AM

Hi everyone. This is my first time posting here so I don't know what to expect. I got this website from my counselor yesterday evening. She told me that people with HIV/AIDS are here to ask questions and share their experiences with so here I am. I could'nt figure out how to log in so if someone could share that information with me I would appreciate it I plan on coming here often.
A little background on me. I am a heterosexual man 30 years of age. I got drunk 8 months ago and had an act of unprotected sex with a girl. First mistake. I had been seeing her aaround and she appeared normal yeah right. She was a bigger girl so I though nothing about HIV. Well in the week to follow I had an ulcer appear in my mouth. I wasnt ill yet so I went to the doctor and he told methat indeed it was but it was not a normal ulcer it was about 2 inches long. Then i visited him again with a pimple like rash on my forehead to my head. Well at 2 weeks exactly it hit me. I had like a sunburn rash on my whole body. Diareaha was here also and the worst muscle ache and fatigue ever. This was no ordinary flu. I have never had mono but if this was anything like it i understand. My hands and feet burned, every muscle felt like it was deteriorating fast. Ance began breaking out all over me too. I had to be hospitalized 2 times during this. Many more symptoms also but you get the drift.
I began testing. To this day I have tested elisa negative. Well this in mind I new something wasnt right in my body. I have seen 3 specialist and with a negative elisa I had an uphill battle on my hands. They tested me RNA test and undetected everytime. Also a DNA test negative too. Well since I documented my illnesses throughout this by going to my GP I was taken somewhat serious. All cbcs were normal with low wbc throughout. My SED rate was elevated at 8. The doctor decided to do some further tests on me and she communicated with the state health dep. and they ran a test i think called a P.E.R.T test on me i dont even know where they sent it too. It can back reactive showing that I indeed have HIV. I am shocked but I new it in the back of my mind. I dont know what is worse having this or not being able to find it through regular testing. I cant start meds yet b/c they want to find a starting point and some way to monitor the drugs effectively. We dont know what strain it is or how virolent it is. All I know this is a nightmare. Numerous experts are in contact with my doctor and it seems I am going to make her quite popular amongst the HIV specialist community. I know this is terrible. My family and everyone thought I was crazy but I new I was right.
To all of those who are worried about HIV I can tell you that if you think you have it, believe me you would know it for sure. It isnt like a cold or even flu it is so worse. It feels like nothing you can imagine. Take the worst flu youve had and multiply it by 1,00 nd that still wouldnt be close. I thought the tests were good but like I was told that they are designed for what we know about how could it catch what we dont know yet. This is a virus and is evolving and emerging everyday with different strains, mutations, etc. The elisa test is geared for what we know to date. This came straigh from a specialist. This is all quite new to me so I am dealing with the shock and am quite stunned. I dont know where the future is taking me but this is going to be hard. I would like to here from others with positive status and with there was another in my situation also. Please respond to me. Thanks for listening I really need some help in getting through this. It took alot but I never quit looking for something being wrong and new that with everything else negative even the test, It was sexually related since that is when my life stopped. It took my doctor alot of time and effort with me to figure this out I just hope i get mediciton to prolong life for me i am only 30 years old. I am quite sure that this has happened to others also since it cant be picked up on tests. How many I dont know. But it is out there circulating so be careful whatever you do I would hate for others to go through what I am going through. Bye for now please wirte back if you will.

wow.. i am quite speechless. thats really major bad news.

on the other hand you can be very proud of yourself about your battle with the docs. you have really done the first steps to save your live and that of many others, too.

i sincerly hope:

* ...that the scientists figure out the molecular structure of your virus very quickly

* ...that it turns out to respond well to treatment (maybe even better than the normal strains)

* ...that it maybe turns out to be not so virulent than normal hivI-B

i am in a similar situation but i dont want to discuss it on this board anymore for several reasons.

would you mind sending me an email to joe_hivtest@yahoo.com ? i would really lile to exchange some info with you!!

i would also be very interest in the contact info of your ID. i would like her to connect with my doc!

could you please email me?
thank you a thousand times!!

joe, switzerland

Thanks for sharing your story. I'm very sorry to hear about your struggle and the ultimate outcome. There are several of us on here that continue to test negative after the window period. In my case, the Dr's chalk it up to depression/anxiety and antibiotic use, even though I've had esophagial candidiasis, an AIDS defining illness, which is rare in early HIV but can occur during the ARS time period during the initial severe depression of the immune system. In my state, an esophagial candidiasis diagnosis triggers a manditory HIV test and infectious disease referral, negative again. All my symptoms came on after a low-risk encounter and persisit to this day to varying degrees. I'm glad your GP didn't give up on looking for the root cause of your symptoms. Mine has, loading me up on anti-depressant drugs and writing me off as a head-case, hence the nickname "crazy_person". I've seen no less than 8 different GP's and Specialists, and they all ignore HIV because I test negative ELISA. Good luck to you in your efforts to bring the virus under control for you and keep us posted on your progress. Is it possible that you are falsely positive on your PERT test? Were you told what variant strain you have (i.e. type "O" or HIV-2, etc.)?

some other questions new
      #42408 - 10/26/02 08:28 AM

dear William,

* where your CD4/CD8 helper cells monitored? do you know their current value?

* PERT (Product-Enhanced Reverse Transcriptase Assay) enables detection of infective retroviruses using the enzyme "Reverse Transcriptase". This includes HEPATITS C, HTLV-A and HTLV-B. Have these viruses already been ruled out in your case? They could be responsible for the reactive PERT test. (however i aggree that given your type of exposure and symtoms HIV would be more likely than e.g. hep-c)

thanks,
joe

Interesting timing on your post. Lately all we see are people testing past the window and convinced they are infected. I wonder how truthful you post is. If you want to hear from positive people why didn't you post on the I just tested positive board or Living with HIV. Is it because you didn't see the list of all the boards for HIV people when you got to the main index or is it because you want to stir up trouble.

Why did the P.E.R.T test pick up the virus and not the DNA or the RNA test?
What does the test mesure? IF the DNA nor RNA nor antibody picked up your strain, how did the PERT confirm HIV??
PRAY TELL?

to answer your question: the PERT (Product-Enhanced Reverse Transcriptase Assay) test reacts on the enzyme "Reverse Transcriptase", which is common to all retro-viruses. However the test has some shortcomings (e.g. relatively low sensitivity) and is used only for means of research.

1.The pert assay looks for "any"retrovirus, not just hiv.
2.i mentioned this test, when i was posting under a different name.because you anonymos wouldnt leave me alone.
3.your story has been written in a childlike manner and style for one reason to worry people.
4.i doubt if you could even get a pert test,
as very few doctors know of this test.
5,joe in swiss is one of the few people whom know of this test, since you are in usa,the test is not avalible there.
anonymous aka will,you are a fool......to yourself....john

You're a fine one to talk. Wasting all that time and money bothering every doctor out there that have patients that have real infections just because you refused to believe your tests. Thinking you are some kind of HIV expert. If you were you would have believed your results. Guess it hadn't occured to you how foolish you are.

1.I NEVER EVER SAID I WAS AN EXPERT.
2.ALL THE EXPERTS I SAW,WERE PAID FOR THEIR CONSULTATION.
3.ALL THE CONSULTANTS HAD PRIVATE CLINICS,IN THEIR SPARE TIME,WHEN THEY ARE NOT IN THEIR HIV CLINICS.
4.IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY,THEN YOU TOO CAN SEE THEM,
SO DONT BE JEALOUS.
5.HOW I SPEND MY MONEY IS UP TO ME,
I ALSO SHARED ALL THE INFOMATION I RECIVED FOR FREE HERE.
SO IM DOING A GOOD SERVICE FOR POOR PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF WHOM CAN,T AFFORD TO SEE THE BEST........JOHN
