delayed seroconversion
      #40946 - 09/28/02 01:49 PM

Two questions:
1. Can being very active (going to the gym 5 days a week, playing sports) delay seroconversion past 6 months? Are there any factors that can delay seroconversion?

2. I have read that HIV can cause very long and severe genital herpes outbreaks. If I was in the middle of a possible long outbreak, and I had a negative HIV test during this outbreak (6-7 months after the 1st outbreak and possible HIV exposure) Can I rule out HIV?

-6 month negative test and still worried :(

There are no studies on activity and delayed seroconversion. I was, and still am very active, and it diden't delay mine. But it has helped with my phisical and mental health.
I would be hapy with your 6mo negitive, 3mo is conclusive unless you have a knowen exposure(knowing the person is pos, not just thinking they could be) and 6mo is conclusive if you know the status. You are negitive, be happy.

Why would 3 months be conclusive unless it was a known exposure,If three months is conclusive for uknown why would it not be conclusive for a known exposure,as the unknown could just as easy be exposure from a positive person.Am i missing somthing or what sounds like a bit of a gamble on the three months to me.

G-man,
Now I find myself, (and certain others are as well) really perplexed. Why is 6 months conclusive only if you know the status? This leads me to further believe that more people than known or reported actually do take longer that 6 months to sero convert. I would think that conclusive is conclusive period. How is someone going to know someone else's status? They certainly would not admit it if they were positive. Another point: what about those people that are positive, but haven't tested? You know as far as they are concerned, they didn't test, naturally they're not positive...but really have no idea or figure they are so have not tested. Please clarify???

Anon,
If you have been reading my previous posts you would know the only reason I say 6mo is for piece of mind. I know that 3mo is conclusive no matter if you know the status of the partner, but for piece of mind sake I feel that to close all doubt out of your mind a 6mo test is the best way. Many on this board feel that there is a possibility of late conversion, but in odds the possibility of being a late converter is so slim that the decision is up to you and your feelings on testing at 6mo. According to an article that was posted some months ago the CDC reported more than 2,000,000 people in the US alone are infected with HIV, many are infected but refuse to test due to fear that they may have something in there system that might kill them. Well we all have this thing called fate, we do not know what is in store for us tomorrow and could live to be very old, or have something happen and not be here for tomorrow. Lightning strikes more than once and you never know what that other driver is going to do. The only reason I say test at 6mo is to relieve the doubt that you may (though the odds are against it) be a late converter.

Thank you Gman. You have helped me more than you even know. Just to clarify, I did not know the status of partner. Well anyway, good luck and god bless.
