4 years ago I gave first aid to a guy who had been wounded in a fight. He was bleeding.I approached him trying 2 help but he pushed me away.Later on when I left I noticed a big stain of blood on my t-shirt at the level of my arm.At that time I didn't know of his hiv status and didn't check carefully the condition of my skin nor washed the area althought I remember that the skin was intact.A friend of mine who knows the guy informed me that he is now in the hospital becouse of opportunistic infections resulting from hiv.I'm so scared and suicidal.I have been suffering from panic attacks since this new and I want to put an end to my life.I'm terribly scared of being infected and having infected my wonderful partner.I can't get the courage 2 get tested.I have read in the cdc guidelines that exposure of intact skin to infected blood for a prolonged time can result in transmission. Can any1 shed some light on this information?Thanx in advance. tired from Italy

Don't worry the only way you could get infected is if you had an open cut.Get tested to ease you mind.

Skin is the greatest barrier against HIV. Unless you had an open cut then it didn't get through. So, no HIV here. If you're still worried, then get a test. It will come out negative. Hope this helps!

As long as you had no open wounds where the bloodstain was you are ok. There has to be direct blood-to-blood contact to contract HIV via the skin. The epidermal layer with no openings blocks the virus.
