Does anyone know if marijuana could cause a false positive test result (specifically for an HIV DNA by PCR)? I smoked a lot about five days prior to my test. Also, I am on an antidepressant/anti-anxiety medication called Effexor (150 mg). Does anyone know if antidepressants would interfere with such a test? Thanks a bunch everyone.

HMMMM,YOU SEE that is the problem with pcrs.they can somtimes give false positives.never make a judgement on one pcr alone.ok,what to do. 1.get another dna pcr(by a different lab). 2.if that is positive too, then get an antibody at three months to confirm. 3.or get a bdna viral load,if the viral load is below say, 5000copies ml.then wait for the antibody.(i would expect 100,000copiesml+with no antibodies.and new infection.) 6.dna pcr is a good test,BUT,they are so sensitive that some people tend to trigger them.that tends to be genetic markers rather than substances etc.

sorry,i forgot to answer your other questions. the answer is no,it will not influance the test. the test is looking deep inside your pbmc,s your white blood cells, for the proviral dna itself.ok....john.

What symptoms are you having? My husband was on effexor and had BAD night sweats. Is this what you are refering to?
