please help
      #36571 - 07/01/02 08:13 PM

I had a manicure yesterday. sometimes when the paint gets on your finger, the manicurist will wipe it away with their fingernail. i was looking elsewhere, and she did that a few times, and when i turned around, i noticed that she had blood on her finger, right by the nail. i didn;t notice any open cuts on me (though earlier she cut my cuticles, but no bleeding occurred). why/how can someone do someone's nails while bleeding/?? does this put me at risk??

Unless you've had unprotected sex or shared needles you are not at risk.

In the 20 years of this disease have you ever read or seen a case that someone got infected from getting a manicure? In order for you to become infected with HIV the virus needs to get into your bloodstream AND under certain conditions. HIV does not live long outside the body. What makes you think that your manicurist even has HIV? You don't have HIV, you don't need to get tested.

from what i understand the skin itself is a pretty good barrier. which is why you need an open cut yourself or for the infection to get into the right type of mucosal area on your body. so unless she then stuck her finger in your ass, you'll be fine. wait 3 months then get tested if it really makes you feel better, but you have a better chance of actually catching it from a public toilet seat (which wont happen either).
