Is this possible? I always used protection but he never held it the base when pulling out all these other websites suggest this as safe sex....................Now, I'm even more scared..........

You must hold it at the base not to prevent spillage but to prevent slippage, if it didn't slip you're ok. And slippage when pulling out isn't that particularly dangerous, it is slippage during intercourse that is particularly dangerous, at least i think.
