There seems to be one VERY important factor that is left out of the equation when the issue of the window period is discussed. Everybody is talking about how many people have been studied to come up with this window period; and then there are the comments like the one below questioning the amount of people studied to come up with the window period. How are "they" supposed to know what the window period is if people aren't testing every week after a possible exposure?
The one thing that is left out of the equation is the fact that HIV is a virus, albeit a pretty nasty little sucker, but a virus none the less. The immune response to an invader is pretty much the same across the board. The amount of time that it takes for a normal immune system to respond to this invader, whether it be HIV or a cold, is pretty well documented. There is a process, PERIOD. It does not matter what that invader is, the immune system will respond similarly.
So if you take the known (how long it usually takes the Humoral Immune System to respond by creating antibodies) and then study people with known exposure dates (usually healthcare providers with occupational exposures), you come up with a pretty solid piece of evidence as to what the window period is. So you see it does not really matter how many people were studied because there were enough to convince a VERY conservative organization like the CDC that HIV antibody production falls in line with most other bugs that require that type of immune response.

Thank you!!!!! You brought up a great point. There isn't anything magical about HIV. It's just another virus. It follows the rules like other virus'. I love common sense!
