Alarming Info - Window Period

Can't believe this from Dr. Susan Little about window period:

What can't you believe exactly? And where's the "alarming info"?

Sounds totally believeable and unalarming to me.

If it's the "more than 95% of people to have a positive HIV antibody test by 19 weeks following infection" bit you're worried about, well, she's just applying one set of guidelines (and the most conservative set of guidelines available, understandably) to the person's 19 week test.

And more than 95% means as close to 100% as a doctor over the internet can ever say. Which means 100% basically.

Especially for someone with "SLIGHTLY" swollen lymph nodes that start 10 weeks after a "POSSIBLE" exposure.

I just thought that 13 weeks test is conclusive.

It is considered conclusive. Dr. Little tends to be a bit on the conserative side.

I too find this alarming. 95% is a lot different than saying 100%. If the CDC recommends 3 months, one would be inclined to believe that the percentage of people seroconverting by 3 months would be very, very close to 100%.

Yes but Dr Little said "MORE than 95%", which is massively different to "95%". "More than 95%" means something else and is basically a statistical certainty in this case.

Plus Dr Little is there to answer questions from HIV+ people about their lab results. Ask any HIV expert face-to-face one on a one-to-one about this sort of scenario and they will quite rightly tell you to go home and stop worrying because you are negative.

how does 95% mean 100% basically. What math class did you take? If the doctor wanted to say that close to 100% would seroconvert at 3 months she would have said 99.9%. Duh

And why do you keep reading "more than 95%" as just 95%?

Anyone who's been round the block knows exactly what "more than 95%" means in this case, either in statistical terms or in clinical terms on the available evidence, or more appropriately, both. Most doctors not to mention national guidelines will agree that this sort of case is more than 99.9+++%, which last time I took my "math class" is still "more than 95%".

If you want to wilfully misinterpret the doctor and ignore the bulk of the evidence though that's fine. Remember though that the doctor is actually running a board for HIV+ people who need to understand their lab results. If she wanted to answer questions like this, she'd be running a different Board.

I guess that everyone uses different figures to convey the same meaning. The majority of HIV specialists say that almost everyone will test positive by 90 days if they have been infected. More than 95% is almost everyone. Don't get hung up on the percentage that she used to get her point across. There is no need for alarm- the CDC recommendations have not changed.
