Is thrush considered little white bumps around your taste buds on the back of your tongue?

Please see answers below. Thrush must be scraped off and leaves red marks where it was. It is not bumps and usually in multiple locations.

Many people have coated tongue which is white stuff on tonge that comes off very easily. This is caused by dry motuh, food build up, dringing or smoking as well as sitting at the computer with mouth hanging open trying to determine if you have thrush or not.

If had risk via one of the three known ways HIV is transmitted, test at 3 months and move on.

Loved your comment about sitting in front of the computer trying to determine if you have thrush. Too funny! I'm wondering why Dr. Reznik on The Body oral site states the opposite of what you said. That site says that thrush wipes off (leaving red marks sometimes as you said) and that coated tongue is not easily all wiped off. Am I misunderstanding?

Thrush (Candidas) is most often seen in babies and when immune systems are compromised by things like HIV or inherited Immune dysfunction, diabetes or by antibiotic use and typically looks like plaques and can be brushed off. The key thing here as I understand it is brushed off. According to the infectious disease specialist I went too, the term means just that. The plaques will come off, but need to put some effort in to it.

The body says:

Coated tongue is a condition normally seen in the general population, which is nothing more than an overgrowth of the normal papillae of the tongue which traps oral bacterial plaque and debris. It may be possible for Candida species to be present, as over 60% of the general population harbors the fungal organisms, which lead to candidiasis or thrush. This is why Candida species are referred to as a commensal organism.

Candidiasis or thrush is an overgrowth of this commensal organism which can appear anywhere within the oral cavity. Candidiasis is associated with underlying medical problems such as diabetes or HIV disease as well as use of certain medications including broad-spectrum antibiotics and topical or systemic corticosteroids. Where it is possible for pseudomembranous candidiasis to appear solely on the tongue, this is not normally the case.

Me:

My dentist said that dry mouth (Which stress can cause), eating certain foods, and lack of proper hydration can lead to food build up on tongue which can resemble both.

Dr. Reznick says:

The area in question on the slide located at www.hivdent.org/slides/atrophic_candidiasis_tongue2.htm is not candidiasis, but rather a simple coating of the posterior portion of the tongue. As I have mentioned previously, it is common to have a coating on the posterior portions of the tongue as the cleansing properties of the oral cavity are not as effective in this area. I would suggest that you gently brush this area every time you brush your teeth.

DR

Hope that helps.

By the way, I thought I had thrush and was just from me sitting at the computer with mouth hanging open staring at HIV web pages.

I think I'm doing what you were-sitting at the computer too much! You've been so kind in answering me and I really appreciate it. I think I might just have that tongue coating-I have a bad tooth too which probably is adding to it. Do you think those "plaques" which brush off and are thrush are obvious enough in size that they'd stand out and be more noticeable than the "tongue coating?" I guess I never paid that much attention to my tongue before-it could have looked like this for years and I just didn't notice. I'm sure being a smoker doesn't help matters. Thanks Bottom Line-hope to continue communicating with you.

Nope, smoking definitely does not help. In fact from what I have read, that seems to be a common cause of growth on tongues. Cheimicals in cigarettes can leave tongue yellowish.

The doctor I went to said that the cases in which she had seen thrush were very obvious and it took her all of 10 seconds to identify. Of course there are milder cases and more severe but I have yet to chat with anyone who has actually had it. Mostly just normal tongue stuff.

Hope this helps.
