Need Answer -- Scared to Death!
      #30555 - 03/25/02 09:22 AM

Recently I went into a preview booth at an adult video store. Never done this before. There was semen on the floor from the previous visitor (just 5 minutes before me). I did not contact the semen on the floor. However, I did sit on the bench in the booth and masturbate. I am wondering, if there was semen on the bench (I felt first and did not feel anything wet) and it got on my hand, then I rubbed my genitals, could I have given myself HIV. I am really, really scared. Please answer. Do you have any thoughts? I am married and wonder should I tell or test?

Hello there. How was Film :)

HIV is spread in three ways.

1. Sexual Contact

2. Blood products - IE infection from donated blood (not big problem now)/ or needlstick injuries with infected blood.

3. From mother to child.

The disease does not survive well outside the body and needs to get to Immune system in order to infect.

I would say that based on exposure you are fine.

Next time, rent the movies and share with wife. Never know what might happen.

In my opinion, and granted I am not a doctor, your risk is very low. The basis of my response assumes that there was infected semen on the bench.

1. Unless you have an open sore or cut(a direct route to your bloodstream) on your hand then you are fine. HIV cannot get inside skin that there are no breaks in.

2. As far as putting your hand on the bench, and then masturbating, the same answer applies. As long as you do not have any open sores or cuts on your penis then you are most likely OK. Also, as long as your hand had no semen on it and you rubbed it into your urethra (the hole you urinate through) then you will be fine. Let me put it this way, your exposure would not get you PEP treatment at a drug clinic and if I was a betting man, I would put ALL of my money in your favor.

In regards to you telling your wife, that will be your call. Me personally, I would be tempted to say something but that is ME. I am one that does not best to communicate when I am involved with someone, especially where health issues are concerned.

To close, as long as you have not cuts, abrasions, or skin breaks and did not rub infected semen into your urethra, you are most likely fine.

I hope this helps. Take a deep breath, and relax.......

I've seen quite a few of this type of question on the Safe Sex and Prevention Q&A here and on the John Hopkins site.

I've never seen an answer where the person was told they had any risk at all. HIV does not transmit in that fashion. I would suggest you spend some time reading about transmission on those sites. Then next time you will know what does and doesn't transmit the virus and won't have to put yourself through being 'scared to death' because of a non-existent risk.
