Hello,
I can say to you how it works in my country. In my country you will be notified directly if you would be positive. We have some rules for Blood donations if you may have been exposed to Hepatit or HIV you cannot give blood for 6 months up to 1 year. I would think that it would be Very, Very wrong if people that gives blood not will recieve that they are positive. We are talking about a Human Life here, people will need medications to survive in the end.

While the Red Cross does screen blood for HIV, HEP and other things you can't use them as any indication of health.

If they found something they should notify you, but they don't have a set time as far as I know.

Obviously it is wrong to donate blood if your only reason in doing so is to find out your HIV status. Although Blood Banks have excellent screening mechanisms (HIV 1/2 ELISA, P24, NAT) there still is a small window period where a contaminated donation could slip through the cracks.

However, if you were infected or if they found any blood abnormalities they would definitely get back to you although it would take any where from 2 to 6 weeks. If everything turns out ok you will be sent a donor card for future donations.

Bottomline donating blood is a GREAT THING TO DO! However if you are going to do so make sure you answer the pre-screening questions with 100% accuracy.
