From an Infec. Disease Specialist
      #28180 - 02/12/02 03:18 PM

Well, I juts returned from seeing an IInfec Disease spec. for advice and counseling. She said that:

I have a very very small chance of being infected-
Most hetero men are being infected sexually are having uprotected sex. I am CONFUSED here. She INFERRED that since the virus is microscopic, it can infect you via the penis other than the urethral opening-again this was an inference and I am not sure how to interpret. I thought the only way it could get to you was through a mucous membrane OR an opening..I am thinking now that the penis shaft has millions of tiny openings that it can get through-

HELP-clarification!!!!

She also said the the VAST majority of new infections are IVDU.

From what I understand you can only be infected if the virus comes in contact with your mucous membranes, e.g. if it gets inside your urethra, or perhaps through the heads of the penis. If you are uncircumsized then you are, theoretically, at a slightly higher risk because there are cells in the foreskin that fascilitate the uptake of the virus (Langerhans cells). However, the virus cannot penetrate through the skin of the penis unless you have a major open wound on it. That's what I've been told. If you have your condom on, then the head of the penis with all vulnerable areas are protected. Perhaps I'm wrong...

No paul you are right. In fact most cases where a hetero man was infected was because he either had a cut or an open sore on penis. The risk of getting HIV when being the insertive partner and wearing a condom is virtually nil.
