How long must i wait after an unprotected sexual encounter before i can test and feel confident that the results will be accurate?

There are several ways you can take. One is Elisa at 3 months - that is conclusive.
Other tests they might give you some indications is PCR DNA or RNA - either are equaly good and need to be taken 28 days after exposure. PCR's however can produce false positive result so you might need to prepare yourself for it. In order to avoind it - it has to be done in the lab with good experience of HIV testing.
PCR is very sensitive and accurate - but it will not be used for diagnostic purpose - you still have to do Elisa at 13 weeks.
There is also P24 Antigen test, that needs to be taken also early before 4/5 weeks.
All those tests should always be accompnied with Elisa at the time of testing.
This will give some indications but will not be conclusive.
Some experts will agree that third generation Elisa will be detectable after 6 weeks in most cases.
But there is always that 1% or so that will drag you to 13 weeks.
