Confused false positive or false negative?
      #277232 - 07/17/14 01:24 PM

Hi All,

Please help with my story and results.

I had unprotected vaginal sex April 9th,2014. I was male.

Tested on May 2,2014(24 days - 3.4 weeks) - blood was drawn and sent to local lab.
Hiv1/2 antibody( should be 3rd gen elisa)w reflex.
The antibody reactive, but western blot was negative.

Tested again in May 10th,2014(31 days - 4.4 weeks ) - done at quest labs
Hiv1/2 antibody eia( 3rd gen)w reflex - negative
Hiv1/2 differential(multispot) - negative

Test again June 5th, 2014 (57 days - 8.1 weeks)
Hiv 1/2 antibody eia (3rd gen) w reflex - negative
Hiv rna quantitive pcr-rt - undetected

Test again July 10th, 2014 ( 91 days - 13 weeks) - quests labs
Hiv 1/2 antibody and antigen( 4th gen elisa) - negative
Hiv differential (multispot) - negative
Hiv rna quantitive pcr-rt - undetected

I am not a IV drug user or have any immune issue I know of.

Questions:
Am I infected? I will need to test again at 6months mark right ?
Can you test reactive on an elisa( lab test, not rapid or oral )then subsequent test after and all not detect antibodys?
Can the body reduce the level on antibodys like that?
Is a rna pcr-rt accurate at 8.1 weeks and 13 weeks? Since I read it's best at 4-5 weeks can it still be accurate at a later time like my test dates?

"Am I infected? I will need to test again at 6months mark right ?"

No you are not infected. You have tested conclusively negative. There is no reason to continue to test.

"Can you test reactive on an elisa( lab test, not rapid or oral )then subsequent test after and all not detect antibodys? "

Yes. That is known as a false positive. This is why all positive results are confirmed.

"Can the body reduce the level on antibodys like that?"

No. The body doesn't reduce the level of antibodies. If you have them, then you have them.

"Is a rna pcr-rt accurate at 8.1 weeks and 13 weeks? Since I read it's best at 4-5 weeks can it still be accurate at a later time like my test dates?"

The RNA-PCR is accurate indefinitely. It is the test used in monitoring viral load level in patients with HIV. If you didn't have any detectable viral load in any of those tests then that means you don't have any virus in your blood.

All your tests mean only one thing. You don't have HIV.

Thanks so much for your reply Crabman.

If the 24 day reactive was really an infection it would have had to show up again somewhere within those 7 subsequent test right?

Why do general doctors recommend 6 months window testing?

Can a 13 weeks 4th gen elisa duo not be accurate?

I'm just so stressed out and anxious due to the first test elisa reactive. After the western blot and 7 test after showing up negative, if it was an infection it would of showed up in the subsequent test right?
