Believing you're Ok
      #27546 - 01/29/02 02:53 PM

Hey guys. Just a quick question. I am really tying to believe after my 7 month neg. Home Access that I am OK despite a huge array of diagnosed symptoms. I am doing better. I think I am going to give blood maybe just to make sure since I hear they screen for HIV-2, etc. Opinions?

Good luck to everyone!

home access tests are reliable and you're ™.9999999999 neg .. I don't advise you to get another test unless it worries you

When donating blood, they will ask if you are donating in order to get an hiv test, as this is not an appropriate use of blood donation. I hope that people who donate blood will answer the screening questions honestly, as it certainly would not a be very ethical to endanger the health of people who will receive the blood.

I can't believe what a worried well you are, after all those negative tests. Still using symptoms to diagnose yourself? Strange how people who really are HIV+ don't get symptoms for many years, and yet you got them right away.

But seriously, agree that it is very "anti-climactic" to get negative test results. Like, you tell yourself that you will be so very happy if its negative, but when it comes back negative all you can do is wonder if its wrong. I know, because I have felt the same thing. My 6 month test is coming up soon, I really hope that will be the end of it.

Why don't you just assume that you have HIV, and start taking 3 candies every 8 hours telling yourself that it's HAART combination therapy. Then you can get your viral load and CD4 count to see how its working out for you. You'll live. How's your sex life?

I know how you feel...I'm sorry that you have all this anxiety.

First off, the chances of you having HIV-2 and catching it in North America are this:

I think there are 200 confirmed HIV2 cases in North America as of last years CDC
report (which BTW, most are concentrated in NYC and Wash DC, both of which
have large West African communities) divided by the number of people living in
Canada and the USA 400,000,000 people give or take...and you get a number that is so
low 0.0000005% chance of even meeting up with this type of person that it really is not

I know my math for argument sake is not totally correct because what if the person
you slept with slept with someone who slept with someone from West Africa
and has HIV2/...but again this doesn't make much of a rational dent.

I cannot criticize you because I too cannot beleive as it's always easier to see the truth
in others.

If you're really concerned and have symptoms, the rational thing to do (my opinion
only) would to get tested for syphilis and other STDs along with viral leukemia HTLV
and regular chronic leukemia. Whenever we think of Leukemia we think of the severe
form, when in fact many people have a chronic treatable mild form of leukemia.
Gonorrhea can sometimes manifest itself in your joints etc. and can cause a great deal
of problems. The good news is most of this is treatable.

Hope this helps
