Is a 6 week antibody test accurate?
      #273640 - 08/30/13 11:13 AM

I had an accidental needle stick. Patient tested negative for HIV and positive for Hep C. My 6 week test was negative for both( test was 44 days after needle stick). My husband had a sore throat for 3 days that responded to an antibiotic shot, a fever for 1/2 a day(went away after the antibiotic shot), and a sore neck, like a pinched nerve. I read that sore throat, fever, and sore neck are signs of ARS. I'm so scared I've hurt my husband and my baby that I'm breastfeeding. I was told I could breastfeed if the patient tested negative for HIV. Please any help would be appreciated. I can't sleep or eat, can barely function.

Faith , you need to either accept the neg results or just keep testing for no reason. We talked about this in your other posting. Your going to drive yourself and your family crazy It's time to move on or give up your profession

I think I'm ready to give up my profession. This whole thing has been handled very badly by my hospital. It took 5 days to get the results back on the patient. No physician assessed the patient to see if they had any recent exposures or to assess if the patient was in ARS. I'm just suppoar to believe the patient's negative results. I was told by the PEPline that no patient has transmitted HIV to a healthcare worker in the window period. I'm not sure I understand why that is. No one has explained it to me. I just don't want to hurt anyone. It's time to quit being a nurse. I just pray I haven't hurt my baby or my husband.

Please dont panic, 6 week result is very close to conclusive as per many doctors . Even in France 6 week negative is considered conclusive, and same in European countries except in high risk exposure or with strong suggestive symptoms.
