7 month negative but previous positive with symptoms
      #271311 - 03/22/13 07:58 PM

Hi there. Back in late may 2012 I had sex unprotected with a girl, who at the time said she was negative HIV. I got tested for an std due to discharge, it was thrush from her. I was worried and nhs said come back in a month for HIV test to count the window period. So I did negative...worries over? I thought so... I went on holiday and during July I came down with a fever, night sweats, fatigue and headaches but no other symptoms. That went after 5 days. I was convinced it was HIV due to the random appearance of the illness. During this time I was doing cross country swimming and football( was very good fitness) so I was surprised this illness appeared. So when I returned to the uk in August I went for an HIV test. Rapid test was a 4th gen ag/ab combo. This came up mildly positive with no p24. The doc was very surprised and insisted it was false. So he used the insti pot, which looks for antibodies only....negative. So he took my blood draw and sent it for testing. This was a private doc, as I wanted fast results. 2 tests were all negative. However the 3rd test was positive, the same combo test. Doc said he was certain it's false. Ok so I took his word. I asked the girl agressivley what is going on?? I was going to uni in sept and needed answers. I went to nhs in mid sept just before uni and I tested HIV negative??? Ok so am I clean? 3 months gina now.. She said she's clean until finally after me pushing her she said she had hep c, HIV, chlamydia and gon. I was in tears. But I went to test. This time again negative in end of sept for all stds. I still couldn't let this go as I was very fatigued at times, had white tongue and was feeling normal at all. I went to uni with negative tests but obvs all this in my mind. In November early I tested negative again using antibodies. I also paid for a DNA pcr which was negative for HIV and all hep strains. Ok so now I was happy with results. However I still had and have up until today white tongue and I've had 4 colds since the exposure. Unusual....so when I came home for Xmas I tested negative in December and the last test was mid jan for all hep and HIV which was from a gp. He said my tongue dosnt look like thrush as there is no patches on my inner or back mouth only white at back of tongue. I'm starting to feel better, more energy, back in the gym. My gp said my tests are defo conclusive and there is no way a test would miss the HIV by now. I've also had 2 blood counts which show my WBC levels at normal numbers. Can I move on? I might test at 10/11 months but is there much point? Did I maybe have HIV but my body won?? I'm really confused. I'm starting to believe HIV testing is not accurate what so ever.

you had several HIV tests that prove you're HIV negative (including a PCR DNA that looks for the virus itself).

you mentioned NHS which is in the UK. if you're still concerned about your symptoms, you may contact an infectologist and explain him your concerns.

if you can, come back and share what he said to you.

take care.

Cheers for response. I'm not going to a specialist because I just want 100% evidence I'm fine. The tests have got me nearly convinced its just the whole story that's kina messed me about. Is there any possibility these tests could miss the virus due to delayed immune response? I was considering a t cell count, as HIV would have damaged my system this test would show. Thanks

you mean not producing enough antibodies to be detected by the test? this does not matter because you had a PCR DNA that looks directly for the virus.

You have reliably tested negative at this point. Whatever the case was with those earlier tests you never mentioned the confirmatory tests that is used to rule out false positives was positive. Which of course if it had been you wouldn't be here now. False positives happen. That's why every positive result is confirmed with the Western Blot.

You don't need to continue testing over this. You are HIV negative. I know that sometimes it is suggested that people continue to test for 'peace of mind' but all I've seen it do is create 'testing junkies'. Somebody that will get a negative and be happy about it for a while, but then will start to worry so they have to test again in order to get that negative. Better to deal with the fear that keeps nagging at you that causes your concern over your results.

A CD4 count is NOT used to diagnose and since it is easily affected by so many things it's not a reliable indicator. HIV patients get them every 3 months or so. The reason for this is to look at the general trend of the counts and not at any one.

Yeah you are right. Also the false positive back in August would be positive constantly if I was making HIV antibodies? I just want to put this away now

Western blot is not used in the uk. Apparently (I agree) that antibody detection is sufficient in diagnosing, where as western is just looking for proteins, which can appear and disappear due to natural reactions in the body. We just use 3 tests and if all negative then it's clear
