My Risk Story, Symptoms, & Questions
      #269799 - 12/21/12 11:59 PM

Well, Hello everyone. I am a heterosexual male, just graduated college, who is dealing with quite the demon at the moment. I had unprotected vaginal sex with a female from my school on the 21st of October. Not the smartest idea I've ever made, also being that I was/am in a great relationship already. Anyways, about 2 weeks after I noticed a discharge when I woke up one morning, got tested Immediately, and had Chlamydia. I had my girlfriend go get tested at her GP and she came back negative for everything. I guess I found it as a relief and plus I got treated so I just thought it was over with and move on and learn from it, never cheat again.

After about 6 weeks from the incident, It finally hit me, What if she had something more than Chlamydia ? What if she has HIV ? I had been tested the 2 weeks after the incident and again at 4 weeks to make sure I had gotten rid of the Chlamydia and really paid no mind to the HIV tests.. So I ended up asking her (already knowing she gave me Chlamydia) if she had any STD history. She surprisingly admitted she had Herpes for a year but was on Meds to suppress it. I hadn't had any Herpes type outbreak so I was more shocked, and surprised that she didn't even know she had Chlamydia yet she had Herpes.. So I told her about me testing positive for Chlamydia so she went and got tested. This was 6 weeks after our encounter. She ended up testing positive for Chlamydia (of course) and negative for HIV. This would put some peoples mind at ease right ? Not me .

Her not even knowing she had Chlamydia, and already having herpes just worries me. I asked about 1,000 questions about her risk for having HIV and she denies any chances and actually got angrier as I asked. So I decided to leave her alone about it. Here comes the symptoms..

1. Started with night sweats, though I was sleeping on suede couch in my gma's hot apartment with the window open. Lasted about the 5-6 nights I stayed there.

2. Swollen right tonsil, and Swollen glands in my neck, right behind my jaw under my ear. I was driving home one night and it just felt like my mouth started salivating like my saliva glands were swelling. Node under my left ear was swollen and soft for a few days. Went to the doctor he diagnosed me with Lymphadenopathy and gave me a 10 day Amoxicillin treatment. I finished that a week ago, and the right tonsil remains swollen. Throat doesn't really hurt at all.
Right tonsil is still swollen today.

3. Floater in eye vision. It sounds foolish I know but it literally came out of nowhere and is still there. And when I would look across any lit area it would appear like a film was glaring across the lighting after I already focused in (Sounds weird I know). I actually saw an eye specialist about it and she didn't really find anything which made me feel a little crazy. But I never had it before the worry so I felt it could be related.

4. Rash . Now, this is the weird one. My girlfriend has eczema, she had these weird hive like breakouts for a while, but the day after I first had sex with her after the Chlamydia girl, like the very next day after, she broke out again. This was in the two weeks before I even knew I had Chalmydia, which my gf never got. It since has gotten worse, she would break out for a week, then not break out for a week, then break out again. They started off looking like Hives in different spots, then they started to be bigger like bumps that were actually warm to the touch. She saw a dermatologist and ended up being diagnosed as an Idiopathic case of Urticarial Vasculitis. Didn't strike me much .. until now , Im breaking out with the same things !! It started on the back of my neck behind my right ear, then I got a few on my arms, and now its 3 on my right thigh. Its weird I even take my girlfriends Prednisone and Benadryl to fight them. They go down for a while but they come back, its been about a week now. There aren't any on my face or chest but the ones on my thigh and arm are there and they often irritate. They are like red patches, slightly raised, and they itch sometimes. I wouldnt say they are "maculopapular" because they aren't made up of small bumps, but still.. This is really the main thing concerning me as I never break out with these, I've had my problems before with bumps but never these hive-like patches.

5. I haven't had any fever (I check about 10 times a day) , No flu-like feeling , and haven't vomited or had any Diarrhea . I have had a slight appetite change but It may be due to my stress and anxiety about this HIV phobia .

6. I have tested so many times up until now its crazy. I tested about 3 times in that 6th week alone. 2 mouth swabs and once finger pricked, All negative. In the 7th, almost 8th week I took a HIV DNA PCR test combined with the Antibody test .. took about 4 days , results were negative and non-reactive for everything. If these hives didn't start showing I wouldn't even question that test, but they honestly have put a incredulous fear in me. My dad just says "You're fine you don't need to test" ..

I have prayed so hard, the scenes of me praying or even telling my father of my worries have played in my mind almost as many times as the careless and foolish encounter that haunts me. Everytime my girlfriend complains of something wrong with her I immediately hit the internet to see if it could be related. Her period came late, she thought she was pregnant but she wasn't , and she wants a baby so bad, but she wasn't pregnant. Could that be effected by HIV? Anyone out there does my symptoms sound like I have been infected ? I know my risk is there, even with her testing negative 6 weeks prior to our own encounter. Im just severely worried and need to hear any insight. I know that was a lot to read.

Rick

First,thanks for sharing your story.
Untreated chlamydia may increase a person’s chances of acquiring or transmitting HIV – the virus that causes AIDS.But your situation is not that bad since you are negative.
Well,there's no advises came to my mind,so maybe you need to relax and keep eyes on your health and take some test from the general hospitals 2 weeks later together.

Wish you two the best

Thanks for wishing us well. Yea I said after the new year I'd test again. Does the rashes I described sound anything like the rash associated with early HIV ? Or any of the other symptoms ? And the DNA PCR test , the labcorp/stdexpress consultants that administered the tests all told me that testing negative on that test after 7 weeks is almost a guarantee that I didn't contract HIV . Is this true ? It was combined with the Antibody test as well all negative .

Sounds like you need to take a deep breath.. Breath iiiinnnnnn ,.....and ooouuuuttttt.... ok now since you've tested for Hiv you have to start to trust the testing. All these symptoms of swollen glands and sweats , if you re-read your letter you'll see the answer right there my friend. You slept on suede in a hot apartment , you opened windows to cool things off. The rashes that you can't explain ar explained by your stressing out. YOur doing the testing , good , They came back negative believe it . Learn from all of this a move on . If you really , REALLY care about your gf then learn from this once and for all. Sta true and you wo't have these issues again.

Thanks for the reply and I definitely have a new outlook on my relationship & life itself. You're an hiv positive member correct ? Does any of my symptoms , namely the swollen right tonsil that still hasn't gone down even after antibiotics , sound concerning ? Should I just trust the 7 week negative DNA PCR test ?

@ForgiveMe321

you had a risk, so let's go by parts:

1) first of all, you must use condoms with your girlfriend or refrain from sex at all until the end of your window period, that is 3 months counted from your exposure on 21st October. It's your duty to protect your girlfriend. Syphilis and HIV share a 3 months windows.

2) unprotected vaginal sex is a risk for several STIs. Make sure you test for these (some might be asymptomatic, that's why you must test):

http://www.sfcityclinic.org/stdbasics/stdchart.asp

3) with current tests, the vast majority of people infected with HIV will test positive in a test by six weeks from the date of exposure. the fact that the girl tested negative at six weeks, combined with your several negative tests, means that is extremely, extremely, extremely unlikely that you would test positive now. You must test with a classic blood draw HIV test at the 3 months mark for a final result, but expect no other than a 'negative' in your paper, really.

4) Herpes is very common and is not surprised this girl had it. I myself tested positive for Herpes in a routine test and I was always asymptomatic (By the way, you should be grateful this girl decided to test for HIV, some other people would not care at all)

5) Learn from this experience and always use condoms for anal/vaginal/oral sex, or be 100% faithful to avoid any STI.

6) Symptoms are not reliable to diagnose HIV because they can be related to hundreds of other things. Also, if someone HIV+ had your symptoms does not mean that your HIV+ as well. Likewise, if someone HIV+ did not have your symptoms does not mean that you are HIV-. Testing is the way to go.

7) Yes of course you can trust your PCR DNA at 7 weeks, but for the protocol you must test at 3 months (your result won't change, really). Until then, I hope you're using condoms with your gf. And also, don't forget the other STIs.

By the way, by having unprotected sex with your girlfriend I'm assuming you both tested for all STIs together already, right? If not, you should do it.

All the best.

@ashler1977

1) About my gf, the thing is I did have her get tested after I found out I had Chlamydia and she was negative for everything. After being treated we did have unprotected sex several times before the HIV probability or consideration even crossed my mind . That's when I went back to school for a few weeks (6 weeks after encounter) and stayed with my Gma and and had the other girl tested and treated. Then the 7th week I took the DNA PCR test . I was feeling super guilty and like what if I already infected her ..

2) I will test for all other std's as well . I wasn't even aware of the syphillis window .

Is there anyone else out there with any input on my situation. I'm very worried my right tonsil remains swollen, my gf doesn't even have her tonsils anymore and she says she feels some swelling on her right tonsil ! Is this tonsil situation common in early HIV infected people ? I had a negative DNA PCR test at 7 weeks can anyone comment on that ? Does that change usually ?

Thanks for the reply. I feel strongly about the results, but the symptoms are rolling along. More specifically with my girlfriend, her throat is getting worse, yesterday she saw a doctor and was diagnosed with Viral Pharyngitis. She was negative for strep, her ear hurts from it, and they told her to take a cold remedy pill for it with Zinc that she says does nothing for her. Only thing kind of helping is Ibuprofen pain pills. It's scaring the life out of me.

If dr said it was larrengitis then give it time. She may of just gotten that from you but all test say your neg. believe them. Viruses take time to leave the body especially if run down.

Today would make 9 weeks (68 Days) since my risky encounter . I took an in home OraQuick test today and it was Negative . So so far here's how my testing has gone

2 Weeks - Negative Antibody (blood)
4 Weeks - Negative Antibody (blood)
6 Weeks - Negative Antibody (finger prick, mouth swab twice)
7 Weeks - Negative DNA PCR & Antibody (early detection test)
9 Weeks - Negative Antibody (in-home OraQuick)

The testing is ok , but the symptoms are whats bothering me . My girlfriend was diagnosed with viral pharyngitis yesterday and her throat looks terrible. It's mostly on the right side, its white spots on her tonsil/throat, and she was spitting phlegm that had blood in it today at work . Lozenges do nothing for her, its hurting her ear, hurts to talk, and only thing seeming to help a little is prescribed Ibuprofen. It's worrying me to death , my right tonsil is still swollen as well but it isn't painful like hers nor have I been spitting any blood. Still have this unexplained floater in my eye too that the eye examiner didn't find a reason for. I'll continue to post up to the end of my window period and anything else that happens .

Heres a picture of her throat ---> http://s13.postimage.org/kglq6wyuf/photo.png

Here's mine (Swollen ball on right) ---> http://s2.postimage.org/itv7ylbbd/securedownload_9.jpg

@RiverPrincess

It was Pharyngitis she was diagnosed with, and I hope your right maybe its just something going around. But she doesn't have tonsils anymore and rarely gets sick, especially after flu shots . I'm praying you're right and trusting my faith and the testing. Just worrisome you know. She was spitting blood in her phlegm today we're going back to the doctor when she gets off

Just this week (10th week) I developed a terrible sore throat and a couple of sores along my cheek . They're like red spots smh . I still have these floaters in my eyesight as well, & my ears have been ringing a lot . I've heard people don't usually seroconvert this late, but i'm definitely not imagining these symptoms I'm far from delusional . Don't have a fever though . I'm still faithful in my negative results thus far but these symptoms do worry me . I'm not testing again until the 11th , that will be 11 weeks 5 days post exposure .

I took a rapid finger prick test today, couldn't wait two weeks for the other one . 12 weeks and 2 days post possible exposure and it was Negative . God is good . Hopefully the other results are the same I will post those when I get them.
