Oral HIV test
      #269772 - 12/21/12 02:03 PM

Hello,

I am new here but I will try to make my story short. I have been afraid of HIV for the past seven years. I have a had a few partners and required a condom for each sexual act. It was not until four years ago when my partner removed the condom that I became very, very afraid. The last time I was tested was in "2005". I promised myself that I would never have unprotected sex again after that. I make sure that my partners put on a condom before we even started intercourse and always ask them to check and see if it broke afterwards. Four years ago that all changed when I learned that the guy removed the condom without even asking me. I was depressed and thought to myself "what if this has happened before?" What if everyone else lied to me and told me that the condom didn't break when in fact it did.

I went four years without knowing my status. I recently decided to get up the nerve to go. I went to a mobile van and I stood outside smoking a cigarette and crying. I go into the van and they asked a few questions and then handed me a swab. I got kind of nervous because I was expecting someone to prick my finger. I informed the tester that I had smoked maybe five minutes before coming in. She said that is was fine and asked did I eat, drink, brush my teeth or rinse my mouth out within the last 30 minutes. I told her no and she said okay. She had me swab my gums more than once which is contradictory of what I have read on the Orasure website. She stated that she did that to get an adequate sample because if she didn't she would not be able to get a result at all. The test was negative and I felt okay. That was until my mind started to wonder. How on earth do they test for HIV through your mouth. I started reading that it checks for antibodies which can be found in your oral fluid. This was quite interesting to me since I have never heard of it before. Then the nightmare started as I read that this test is not as accurate as a blood test and there is more of a margin of error with this test. What really got me going is when I read about the antigens that are used for the test. It seems as though there is only one type of antigen in this test. As I recently learned, there are several antigens specific to HIV. So does that mean that your body can have one antigen and not the other. I have also heard that these test are not accurate in people with late infection. I mean I though that and HIV test was just that....and HIV test. I though that as long as you test outside that window period with any type of HIV test and get a negative result....then you are considered negative. With this test it seems like if you got infected years ago and took the test and get get a negative result, you can't rely on the result because the test is only good for people who may have been infected recently i.e last years. At this point, I honestly feel like I never got tested at all. I feel like when I go get a blood test, I am going in blindsided because I am still unsure of my status. I understand that there are some people who do in fact test positive on this test so much so that some people get false positives. I just don't think that when they approved this test that they thought much about false negatives and what may and may not cause them.

At this point, I am not even sure how the test works any more. I have heard some people say that it is testing cells and some people say oral mucosal transudate. I am confused...what exactly is it testing? I also am curious if the test can tell the difference between the fluids in your mouth. Does the test know that you have applied OMT/cells to the test strip or if I put only saliva on it would it know that the incorrect specimen is on the test strip and not work at all? For instance....blood test are only made to test blood, if you put ANYTHING other than blood on the test....it just will not work at all. Does this test work the same way? I am more depressed now then I was before I got "so called" tested. I am so afraid of the outcome of a blood test. I am just confused as to how a test that was designed to look for antibodies could possibly not detect them if they were there. How can you mess up this test...I mean you are just swabbing your gums? I am not mad at anybody for my situation. It is mine and mine alone. I am just mad that such a test is allowed to be used. It seems as though this test provides no type of certainty at all. I have read several forums and it seems that everyone that has taken this particular test has some sort of doubt or disbelief about the test result. It seems no one understands the test and can give concrete and accurate information about the test. Unfortunately, when you call the manufacturer they say that they can not verify anything which is BS to me. I mean you all made the test, people just want to know how exactly the test works. I guess what I am saying is....people want to know the science behind the test. I am sorry for the very long post, I just needed to get this off my chest. I am very afraid and confused. A part of me is telling me that God has spared my life and that I need to learn from this and move on and thank God that I did not get a positive or false positive. Then again the analytical side of me always kicks in and drives me completely insane. I hope that someone here can read through all my ranting and answer some of my questions that I have. Thank you all for reading and God Bless!

OK, so you got a negative result with an oral test which you don't trust.

First, read this info

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/testing/resources/qa/oralfluidqandafin.htm

If that does not convince you, and you still don't trust your result despite the more than 99% accuracy of this test, you can always go to a lab, get a blood draw, and test with a 4th generation Elisa.

Regards.

Hi riverprincess,

I am trying, trying trying to move on with my life but unfortunately it is seems to be quite hard for me. I wish it was that easy to just move on. But when you have been dealing with this fear as long as I have and finally get up the nerve to end the fear only to hear "oral test are not as sensitive and accurate as blood test".....it kind of puts a halt on things. I feel like I am in the same place I was before.....uncertain and fearful. I keep hearing everyone saying nothing is a hundred percent....that's funny because I have never heard anyone say that about a blood HIV test. Now I have to be fearful that my blood test results will be different because it seems as though this test seems to miss infections for some reason. Everyone keeps saying that I am fine.....but are they not reading the same info that I am reading about this test? I am just sick of this......why would the gov even approve a test that leaves people in doubt. I am sure this test had to go through a tough process of getting approved for use but I don't think that they took into consideration that the people conducting the clinical trails are not the same people in the field conducting the test and they may not follow instructions despite being trained like the lady that tested me didn't. The instructions clearly say swab once and she had me swab more than once. One would think that there is a very good reason why they say swab once. I am afraid that if there were any antibodies.......which I pray there really wasn't.....that she may have caused them to be diluted or damaged or something. Then there is the antigen thing again.....I mean what antigens are in this test. Are all the antigens specific to HIV included in this test? These are just the concerns that I am having but thank.you for your kind words.

Hi Ashler1977,

I have read that the test is over 99% accurate but I have also read an article that was posted right here on thebody.com that was from an HIV specialist named David Pilcher where in his personal experience the oral fluid test missed 8% of infections. As far as the blood test.....I know I have to do it but I am just afraid of the outcome. I am just pissed at myself for having sex period. I am even more pissed at the person who decided having unprotected sex with me without my knowledge or permission was okay. I have NEVER thought unprotected sex was an option and have always lived by the modo "no glove no love". Now I guess that I am learning that people are selfish and care about only what pleases them. I would never put anyone at risk for anything. I just wish everyone thought like that. Thanks for the info

The way to solve ALL your questions and fears is to just get tested. Nothing anyone here says is going to make a difference to you . Please find the posting here from the woman or spent years in fear and finaaly got tested only to find that she wasted years of her life in fear. You want to live like that it's your choice. There is nothing anyone can do for you. Only you can do what is needed.

You know you are absolutely right. I read the post you were speaking.of. Like this women I have spent years in fear and like this women I finally went and got tested. The difference between and this women......I got tested with a test that still leaves you in doubt, uncertainty and fear. I guess the lesson is never take an Oral HIV test because it's like never getting tested at all.
