HOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!
      #26728 - 01/09/02 11:28 AM

I went to the HIV care unit and saw my id dr. today and explained my entire situation to him. HE DOESN'T THINK I'm INFECTED. WHAT???

He said he said he thinks the elisa was wrong and he did some tests on me which he will get the results on friday. I am praying he is right. He said my symptoms were consistant but the fact that I have headaches right now and a faint rash on my penis means that it is probably another virus (but what??). I should have gone to this guy in the first place instead of coming on this board (if he's right).

He said that it would be next to impossible to get HIV by my exposure...you guys were right (I hope)

I still think I might have it but I'm not certain anymore...he was very nice and pretty sure about the fact that I don't have it, he said that many things could have caused a false positive on the elisa, and my host of symptoms. I think he's doing an EIA?? and a western blot and another test and he's confident. I didn't think he could get the results this quickly though?? Why did my other test take so long???

Please keep your fingers crossed.

BTW...this is not a hoax, I'm not gay (I just said that to Dr. Bob to get an answer from him)and this is the best I've felt in 3 months. :)

I'd like to echo the sentiments of your doctor. I think that everyone who remained skeptical of your test results (based upon your exposure) should feel a tad redeemed. By all means, it is almost IMPOSSIBLE for you to have contracted HIV this way. if you did, you're one unlucky soul - but I have heard HIV specialists say that a virus can throw the Elisa test off - hopefully, some thing else is the cause for your positive test. I agree with your doctor 100%!!!

Either you are not from the USA, or you are mistaken/mislead, or whoever tested you first is completely incompetent. Sorry to be so harsh, but you should not have been given a "Positive" result based on only an ELISA test. This is not the way testing is done. Please read this quote from this link:

http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/SafeSex/Archive/Testing/Q9558.qna

"When one is tested for the HIV virus, the standard antibody tests use an ELISA (also called an EIA) test, followed by a confirmatory test if the ELISA test is repeatedly positive. The ELISA test is normally run several times (from a single tube of blood). If the ELISA test is repeatedly negative, it is considered a negative result and no further testing is done. If it is repeatedly positive, it is confirmed with another test (usually a Western Blot or IFA test)."

And this was common knowledge as far back as 1996, and probably before that as well. Only in the poorest of countries would they give out results based on an ELISA test alone. Are you from Africa?

If you were told you're "positive" it should have been based on a western blot or IFA test, not an ELISA. Of course it is a good idea to retest to make sure that the result was not a false positive.

But if you are now claiming that the result was based on an ELISA, and this new doctor is the first one to realize that an ELISA is not a confirmatory test, then this forum has indeed failed you miserably. Just about anyone here could have told you that ELISA is not a confirmatory test. If your test results were based on ELISA only, then the test was run by incompetent people who are clearly unfit for the medical field.

I will not postulate on the implications that this has on the theory that your story is a hoax. I will leave that for other posters to decide for themselves.

I take back the statement that they were incompetent, and unfit for the medical field. I think there are some countries where ELISA tests are used as confirmatory tests, even though it would border on incompetence for this practice to be used in the USA.

They did not confirm with the west blot?? I read that they cant give positive results unless confirmed by the blot. Where did you take this test? Im confused. anyways good luck, i think your doc maybe right.

Re: even a poz western blot isnt 100% new
      #26791 - 01/09/02 10:58 PM

Even if the Western Blot is poz, check to see if the p31 band was reactive. They never should have told you poz based on the elisa alone, the w/b is more specific, and even the w/b can be wrong. See link:

Look INFECTED, as what I told you before, you should go for other help but not this board only. We can only talk to you via mail. Doctor is the best guy to solve your problem. There is false positive as it was the true experience of my family doctor. Now, I hope you are OK. By the way, test result should come out in 24 hours time if the lab is work in urgent mode. I did that at least 3 times. If you go to public clinic than it takes weeks because they will wait for a big lot to do it at once rather than to serve you one at a time. Blot test is to re-confirm the result of ELISA. ELISA tends toward more false positive and Blot test tends toward more false negative. That is how the matrix work.
Very good luck to you. I feel relax for you for now.
