Hi everyone, Has anyone experienced prolonged GI side effects from PEP? I took kaletra and Combivir for 40 days total (long story) instead of 28. During therapy, I had loose stools that were controlled by loperamide. I've read on this site that side effects SHOULD stop with discontinuation of the meds. Three weeks later, I still have the diarhhrea AND it's yellow-ish. Gross, I know. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance. Like many on this site, this experience is making my OCD worse. I've already looked up infectious gastroenteritis and inflammatory colitis. I don't have a fever, and other than cramping and the loose stools, I feel okay. Oh, I'll add I am female. I've noticed people ask that sometimes.

Yellow loose stool with cramping is caused by the lack of production of bile in the liver. Which is a sign of liver failure and other chronic and severe illnesses of the liver. It may have been brought on by the meds you took for pep or been exasterbated by them. You need to call your doctor right away and have your liver function checked ASAP as well as be tested for hepatitis. An MRI of the liver would probably also help.
Do not wait. This is serious and the sooner you treat it the better off you will be. Left for to long you will most likely have severe liver damage and require a transplant. So the sooner you get in with the doc the better.

Thank you, Kicker, I have blood work scheduled for tomorrow which includes Hep c. I've never injected drugs, but apparently, C can be transmitted sexually. I saw my HIV specialist this morning about this because I was thinking infectious enteritis or inflammatory colitis. I didn't think about hep. She said no to the first two. She suggested I go back to my GP and have stool samples taken. Fabulous. I had labs done to rule out pancreatitis a couple of weeks ago, and my LFTs, amylase, lipase, CBC and something else were all normal. Tomorrow I'm repeating the whole STD panel, the heps, glucose, etc. I hope this is all caused by what I've just learned to be a tumeric overdose. I've been trying to be "healthier", and I've been making vegetable stir fry seasoned with a lot of tumeric. A resident told me it's good as a cancer fighting agent. Like I said, I hope it's that and not the early signs of Hep, but the symptoms which prompted me to write in asking this embarrassing question were horrible. :-(
So thank you so much again for pushing me to actually call my doctor.
