Hello,
I asked this questions in the Ask the Experts area but received no response so I will try you helpful people.
My wife is pregnant and during her 10 week appointment did a routine HIV screening. The results were: Repeatedly Reactive Elisa, Indeterminate WB. Approximately a week and a half later when we came in for the results, new blood was drawn. Those results were: Reactive Elisa, Indeterminate WB, Negative PCR (Less than 20 Copies). The last time we had sex was when we conceived which at the time of the second test was approx. 12 weeks.
We have since has another test done and are awaiting results. (This was a one month retest that we scheduled)
I have read online that PCR testing is accurate early on, before or during seroconversion, but not so much once the body has had time to develop antibodies. I am hoping that these results could be a false positive due to cross reacting antibodies due to the pregnancy.
My question is, How valid is my wife's PCR test since it was about 13 weeks since the last time we had sex? I am assuming if it was her seroconverting that caused the results that either she should have been positive on one of the two WB tests, or shown something on the PCR, right?
We are of course anxious again while waiting for the new test results and are trying not to stress out.
I have not been tested lately but we are definitely low risk people.
Thanks everyone...

Normally when there have been two positive antibody tests, with indeterminate WB's then a person is considered negative. It's not unheard of for pregnant women to have this happened.
The PCR is accurate no matter when. It's the same test used to monitor how medication is working in HIV patients. Sometimes a person's viral load will drop after the initial seroconversion, but only rarely, if at all would it drop down to undetectable.
Please try not to lose much sleep over this. With her test results so far It sounds as if your wife is getting false positives because of her pregnancy.

Thank you for your reassurance, I look forward to the next results which should be in a few days. My only concern with the two indeterminate test results that you were talking about is that they were only a week apart. This one in my mind would make me feel definitive about it since it is almost a month later.
I am open to other opinions as well!
Thank you for telling me about the viral load usually NOT dropping to undetectable levels after seroconversion on its own. I did not know this.
Also thank you for your speedy response. I will post the next set of results for people in our situation in the future.

Hello!
My wife is 7 weeks pregnant and she just had a prenantal routine blood work that consists of an HIV test. I am a worried well and taking 80 mg of paxil for my ocd about HIV. I been tested 8 times and all negative. I am anxious of my wife's hiv test results that would be ready within a week. I am sure you are anxious about your wife's test result. I also read that it is common for pregnant women to have false positive in hiv tests. I do not know how my wife will handle this "false positive" when she gets the results. I only hope that it would be negative. Perhaps you should get tested? This would ease your mind....for me, I am crazy!
