do i re-test?
      #257568 - 09/15/11 05:36 AM

hiv negative 6 week exposure with a 4th gen duo test

risk: unprotected oral msm me giving, no ejaculation, doubt there was precum, for about a minute in total

it's been 3 and a half months since exposure and i still have a barely noticeable irritated throat that causes dry coughing sometimes

rung up the sexual health centre i got tested at specialising in HIV, and they stressed that a 6 week negative is conclusive and that did not need to return. what do you think?

If all you've got is a cough, then I'd let it go. Read my thread and you'll see what can happen when you overtest. Here I am, 12 tests later with my first positive which my doctor stressed is highly likely a false positive because I got a negative western blot right after. I posted in some other forums and got told off pretty quick, basically that I tested too much and won the game of odds and got a false positive. Now I'm back at square one, doing rounds of retests again and it sucks, I'm basically mentally tortured. If you can give it up and let it go, I highly recommend it. Wish I did back when I got my 3 month negative, but I kept coughing and my neck still aches in odd places...

@ Brainfried: Hey, I am truly sorry that you are going through so much mental torture. I am sure you are feeling horrible about the false positive. It is scary! I too have been testing several times. 7 to be exact and all negative. I still have a nasty cough, with bronchitis and folliculitis. I am taking medicine for my mental ocd. I try and I try to get over it but it still comes back into my mind. I am slowly moving forward. I think you should try to relax, and pray to God for your anxiety to decrease. Also, try to ask ur doctor for some anti-anxiety meds, they are slowly helping me. Your western blot is negative, so you are HIV negative.

@Anxious: Hey, I agree with brainfried to stop testing and slowly move on forward.

Don't retest. I knew nothing about tests and times and got cursed into repeatedly taking rapid tests. Had I known about the 4th gen duo/combo, I would have been done with this at 6 weeks. Instead I had a stupid rapid test at the time and kept taking them all the way until now. If that thing is negative at 6 weeks and your doctor told you so, then I would take your doctors advice. I wish I took mine.

thanks for your kind words

i hope you understand my predicament, in that international guidelines still state a 3 month test is needed to deem a test result conclusive. however the uk appears to have it's own set of rules? if a six week negative is conclusive...then really i shouldn't need to retest? i would let this go straight away, but i STILL have a very minor irritated throat, and a few petechiae on my arms.

can hiv symptoms appear 3 months after infection and last for 3 months?

Hi anxious,

I think you should not test but if you want a peace of mind. Then go ahead and test after three months. Remember, you are negative and that if you choose to test ....it is only going to be for a peace of mind.
