Concerned of ARS and HIV expose
      #257451 - 09/12/11 07:17 PM

I had protective condom safe sex penis vaginal insertive (I am the male).

On the 10th day after the possiable HIV expose I started having stiff leg muscles, then pain in my right thigh. This lasted for about (4) days then went away.

On the (14th) day to the (19th) day I had tense neck muscle aches, then some times my foreamrs would ache and weakness in my legs.

(20th) and (21st) days I felt ok, but between the (22nd) day and (26th) day I was very fatigue, notice about (6) to (7) pimples on my right side of my back from the lowere back to just below my arm pit. I developed a canker sore on my lower gum and had (3) nights of mild night sweats.

After the (26th) day most of all the symptoms went away. Then on the (28th) day I developed a odd looking pimple on my right side between my abdomin and back. This single pimple was puss filled and lasted about (2) weeks. I did not pick at it, also when it healed it left a scar.

On the exact date of (6) weeks post expose I started having muscle pain in my right arm triciep, also later that night anf for the past (3) days I had a malaise filling. Then all of sudden I felt very well for (24 hrs). The next day I was very fatigue and weak for about (5) hrs then becoming very well again. I have been filling well since and I have visited my local public AIDS clinc who sated that I needed to wait out testing to the (3) month period, but they suggested I do a VL test at a cost of $75.00. I am currently at the (8) week mark of post expose which I now fill that I should wait out the next (4) weeks.

But my mean question is do you think I exprienced any ARS symptoms. I never had any fever, no sore throat no enlarge/swollen lymph nodes and no body rash, except those pimples.

HIV is not transmitted via protected sex as has been shown in a number of long-term studies conducted with sero-discordant couples.

While 3 months is still considered the window time frame in the United States, most people that become HIV positive will test positive by the 6th week.

Get a test now and know the result will not change between now and 3 months.

Thanks for the reply Crabman. I will schedule a appointment to request a rapid oral HIV test. As stated I am at the 8 week mark.

Also, does my symptoms seem like typical ARS?

Got my test results back:

RNA PCR VL blood test at (9) weeks post exposure:
HIV-1 RNA by PCR = <20 copies/ML

OraQuick Rapid HIV 1 & 2 nonreactive at (81) days post exposure.

Hopfully with above and can say I am HIV negitive and that my OraQuick HIV 1 & 2 is conclusive.

It is just odd to come out negitive with all the symptoms I had during week 2 and week 6 post exposure.

It's not odd, it's extremely common for people to mistake simple things such as the flu for being infected with HIV. I read a study report not long ago that stated in the US that over 1.5 million people seen in the ER alone (does not count private practices or clinics) presented with symptoms "related" to recent HIV infection in ONE YEAR.

Taking the average number of 55,000 people (some say 60 others say roughly 50) are newly diagnosed each year in the US per any given year as of late, most when they need to be hospitalized for an OI. Of the 1.5 that is only 3.6666666666666665% (IF ALL we were counting was ER visits and assuming all the newly diagnosed were done so through the ER and presenting symptoms which is NOT the case at all).

That percentage drops drastically when you add clinics and private practices or even people that never sought treatment but still had the "symptoms".

ARS is a sudden onset and major event that dies as quickly as it starts and without much fan fare. That is why so many people go undiagnosed, because the symptoms (if you have any) are just like the flu in that they come on all of a sudden are intense and then are gone. So your reoccurring symptoms don't fit the bill. After the initial ARS you would not likely see any symptoms for an average of 7 years except regular every day colds.

YOU ARE NEGATIVE. It's a shame that you thought protected sex no matter who it was with was a cause to waste resources that could have been used on someone with more just cause to worry. But you live and learn (hopefully) and most importantly move on.

Thanks for the reply kicker. I guess my mind and body played tricks on me after the fact I was told that the woman who I had sex with was HIV+ a few days after we had sex.

I am still concerned as there are rare subtypes out there that the USA test do not screen for. It makes me wonder how safe is the donated blood bank is in the US with these rare subtypes.

The reason the US doesn't screen for those rare subtypes is because of logistics. Not that we think we are immune being across a big ocean mind you, those it doesn't hurt. These rare subtypes you are talking about are rare for a reason. The people that have them live in some of the most isolated parts of the world. It's easy to forget that we are very mobile in the US but there are people that never see more than 20 miles outside their village and that is a feat in itself.

The rare strains are more or less isolated, they don't travel. These villages and the tribes that live there are not particularly interested in outsiders and rarely have contact with them. Add to the fact they live in remote regions that can take weeks to get to under the best conditions for a US citizen, they certainly don't travel outside what a horse or mule can carry them. There are no airports, greyhounds, cars, etc. Plus these people don't have the money to travel.

So it would be silly to even bother to test for them unless you have been in those particular regions. And the regions are very small by geologic standards.

As far as being told someone is HIV positive by a third party....I really hate high school antics..... I would hope that you would see the folly in your rationale. But if you don't, here it is. How the hell would they know? Are they her doctor? If it's an ex lover or ex roommate or friend well they are an ex for a reason. That's like me saying Hillary Clinton had lipo and ass implants. She annoys me for some reason, don't know why I think its the voice and the constant constipated look she has. How would I know this is true? God now I have to write her and ask if it's true cause someone told me that....oh wait it was me that said that.
