If you read this He are saying that a test at 3 months is MORE THAN 99.5% accurate(Most recent study). He also saying that 6 month window is an "insurance policy." wich means that the insurance companies want to have this 6 month rule and even if their is no eveidence that this happens today they want to have 6 month to cover their Butts. You can never be 100% even if you test at 1 year, In nature or biological nothing can be 100% BUT MORE THAN 99.5% accurate at 3 month is good enough for me. Thank you.
Generally the answer is no. Antibody testing (Elisa with Western Blot) is sufficient in most setting to rule out HIV infection. The usual procedure if there is a known exposure is to get an antibody test at baseline and 3 months. The more recent studies show that more than 99.5% of people will be positive by 3 months. A test at 6 months is an "insurance policy." PCR is used mainly in the setting of an exposure followed by symptoms that suggest new infection, usually if you are testing within weeks of the exposure. The reason is that the antibody test generally becomes positive during the period shortly after symptoms dissappear.
In the question I was asked, a PCR had already been done. A negative PCR in the first months after exposure is strong evidence against infection. The reasons PCR is not routinely used for diagnosis include: 1)Cost 2)The test is so sensitive, so that it can detect low levels of viremia that you get occasional false positives and 3) it is not licensed for diagnosis.
Hope this helps

In the previous message it was stated that the Elisa will be reactive soon after symptoms disappear. What if ARS symptoms remain for a few weeks, or reappear? Is there any trend between Elisa detectable seroconversion and when ARS occurs?
Unfortunately I am in the window period (9 weeks) and I am unsure if my symptoms are from an infection or from anxieties. The sore throat and lymph nodes in my neck have been present for about 3 weeks. I tested at two months because I was sick of waiting and will get the results this week.
