Long Term Symptoms without Diagnosis
      #256546 - 07/12/11 02:40 AM

I'll try to keep this brief. Here is my chronology;
1996 - no sexual contact, just kissing with exchange of saliva with a female in a foreign country. Days later, growth on underside of tongue...fleshy in color with a white tip. Over a couple of days, it breaks open, bleeds a bit, and goes away. Tip of tongue near area of growth has strange sensation to this day.

1997 - notice I'm gaining weight and drying out (dry skin, dry hair). Very unusual as for years I had oily hair and skin.

1998 - Case of mononucleosis and Bells Palsey

2001 - Case of Pleurisy

2003 - diagnosed with osteoporosis and a dysfunctional gall bladder. Pain in right abdomen. Laparoscopic procedure to remove gall bladder

2004 to present - Often fatigued, continuous pain in right side below rib cage and lower right back. I think it's liver related, but tests indicate otherwise. Doctor thinks possibly shingles. Red rash-like symptoms on various of the body (legs, upper -arms\shoulders mostly). Lower legs and top of feet discolored from vitilgo. Spider and Varicose veins in lower legs. Also currently experiencing what seems to be itchiness and dryness in my arm pits.

Have had many female partners over the years, often engaging in unprotected sex. Regularly tested for HIV...last test November of 2010, results were negative.

I am concerned and actually getting tested for a whole suite of STD's tomorrow. Knock on wood, it's all negative. But I wanted to share my symptoms with those who frequent this board for comments. If my results were negative back in November of last year, do my symptoms sound like something indicative of HIV infection that just was not showing up on a test yet?

An am 41 years old.

Thank you for the assistance. I realize this is an HIV board and I am posting a bunch of information that may be unrelated to HIV.

If your results keep coming up over the years as negative, than you most likely are. You are speaking about symptoms that have been coming up over the years, since 1996. That is a 15 year time frame, and if you have always tested negative than I doubt you have HIV. However, the symptoms you are experiencing could be related to a number of other infections out there.

My aunt has Hepatitis B, and she got it from sharing needles back when she was a teenager. She told me her symptoms, and some of them seem to be what you may be going through. Hepatitis C also shares some of these symptoms, especially because you claim having pain in the liver. Have you ever been tested for Hepatitis? You may want to ask your doctor for blood work on that. Don't let that worry you, because it is highly possible that you might be suffering from something else, something that is harmless and just causes problems once and again.

Go to your doctor and just ask to be tested for every STD. If your results come back negative, ask to be tested for different forms of cancer. If that is negative, then you have ruled out the majors which should give you some peace-of-mind. :-)

Can you say Hyperthyroidism? Changes in hormone levels can cause all your problems and you may be experiencing this. The thyroid gland produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). In most cases of hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland itself produces too much of these hormones.

Some symptoms of this condition include:
Difficulty concentrating

Fatigue

Frequent bowel movements

Goiter (visibly enlarged thyroid gland) or thyroid nodules

Heat intolerance

Increased appetite

Increased sweating

Irregular menstrual periods in women

Nervousness

Restlessness

Weight loss (rarely, weight gain)
Breast development in men

Clammy skin

Diarrhea

Hair loss

Hand tremor

Weakness

High blood pressure

Itching - overall

Lack of menstrual periods in women

Nausea and vomiting

Pounding, rapid, or irregular pulse

Protruding eyes (exophthalmos)

Rapid, forceful, or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)

Skin blushing or flushing

Sleeping difficulty

Sounds like a lot of the symptoms you described. Also it can cause dry hair and skin in some people. Now here is some other "bad news" if its Hyperthyroidism it may have been brought on by Graves Disease which can cause bladder issues as well as attack other organs or tissue.

I am not saying that it is the final answer, but it fits pretty well. Simple blood work will help in finding out if this is the case and could have easily been over looked because most standard exams with blood work do not include the labs needed to test for this.
Some symptoms of Graves include but not limited to:
Anxiety
Irritability
Difficulty sleeping
Fatigue
A rapid or irregular heartbeat
A fine tremor of your hands or fingers
An increase in perspiration or warm, moist skin
Sensitivity to heat
Weight loss, despite normal eating habits
Enlargement of your thyroid gland (goiter)
Change in menstrual cycles
Erectile dysfunction or reduced libido
Frequent bowel movements or diarrhea
Bulging eyes (Graves' ophthalmopathy)
Thick, red skin usually on the shins or tops of the feet (Graves' dermopathy)
