HIV Risk - Blood in Eye & Glass Cut
      #256487 - 07/08/11 12:44 PM

Hi, all. Please let me know if I am at risk for HIV from these to encounters. I was in Canada on vacation a couple of weeks ago and we left at about in the morning and came back at about 3:00pm. When we left the maid was cleaning the suite beside our suite. We had already been staying in this suite for 4 nights and had a 1 night stay left. When we returned she was outside of the suite and she could barely speak English, but she said that she was finished cleaning our room. I thanked her and walked in. Within 5 minutes of entering the suite, I went to the bathroom to change clothes. I touched the door knob to enter the bathroom. I then laid down to take a nap and felt something in my eye that flew in from the sheet. I began probing my eye with my finger to get it out. I did not think anything of this until at approximately 9:00pm, I was sitting in the living room area and pulled up a stool to coin a scratch off ticket. As I was pushing the stool back under the table, I cut my finger on a piece of glass. It was bleeding pretty badly. I thought that maybe the maid had broken a wine glass and tried to clean it up and did not get it all. I know that this glass was not on the stool before we left because I had used this stool continuous throughout our 4 day stay there. I did not think anything of it, I washed it with warm water and put a bandaid on it. I awoke the next morning to brush my teeth at the vanity mirror and I saw smeared blood finger prints over the mirror. I know that these fingerprints were not there before because we had been staying in the suite for a few nights before. Immediately, I began worrying on whether the maid cut herself on the same glass that I cut myself on. I know that she used the stool to stand on to reach the vanity mirror to clean it. I do not know the maid's HIV status. About 8 days after this, I had noticed that my eyes felt like there was something in it and felt swollen. Both sides of my jaw and neck swelled up. My ears felt full. I did not have an earache, sore throat, fever, or anything. I went to the doctor and said that I had swollen glands in these areas. So I became more worried.

If the maid cut herself on the small piece of glass before 3:00pm and then I cut myself on the same piece of glass at 9:00pm,am I at risk for HIV? I saw the piece of glass that cut me, it was very tiny, but I did not see any visible blood on it.

I know that the maid cut herself because of the fingerprints that I saw over the vanity. If the maid touched the bathroom door knob with her bleeding hand and I touched the door knob 5 minutes later, then touched my eye - Am I at risk for HIV? Should I get tested? I have not had any other risks.

I am very worried.

thanks so much

1) the piece of glass in your eye, if it was even that, which is questionable since something like that normally would require a trip to the ER to have a doctor remove it. HIV loses it's ability to infect within minutes of being introduced to the outside environment. You believe the blood was dry, so any HIV would have been dead, dead, dead.

2) touching a door knob that may or may not have HIV 'tainted' blood on it. - Seriously? See #1 and add that HIV can not be transmitted through skin.

To Clarify - Glass did not go in my eye. I got cut by a piece of glass on the finger. I am not sure what flew into my eyes from the sheet, but I am not concerned about that. I am specifically concerned about the HIV risk of cutting my finger on the same glass that the maid cut herself on 6 hours before.

As for the eye risk - I touched the doorknob and it may have had blood on it from the maid whom cut herself a few minutes before, then I touched my eyeball (mucous membrane). I think I put my self at risk in these situations. Please help....

This is almost comical if not for the fact it shows how ignorant you are. No risk of hiv in any of that scenario. Although are you sure it wasnt blood from her time of the month cause that would change everything?????

these are not risks for HIV. you cannot get HIV from either of the scenarios you described. you were not at risk.

HIV does not survive long outside the body. so cutting yourself on a piece of glass that the maid cut herself on, not a concern. and rubbing your eye after touching the doorknob, also not a concern.

Thank you all for responding...

The reasons why I became concerned is because of the swollen glands. Early last week I started getting transient type pains in various areas of my body. I went to the doctor on Thursday of last week and she said that the locations where I was having this pain were where my lymph nodes were. She checked me and said that they were fine and not swollen. I also had joint pain in my shoulder, arm, and numbness in my finger. She did an HIV blood test & other tests on me 19 days from the risk and they were all negative. I think the HIV test was an antibody test. I also tested for HIV during my routine physical in April and it was negative. My concern is that I had some night sweating that occurred for 2 or 3 nights starting on Friday of last week, so maybe my glands are swollen now. I am afraid right now and not sure what is causing my symptoms. I really want to think it is anxiety, but I do not know. I'm thinking about taking an HIV test at 6 weeks, but then I heard that 3 months is conclusive. I know this sounds paranoid or comical, but I am really freaked out over this. I am most concerned that if I do have HIV, I could somehow put my family at risk. Is there an HIV test I can request from my doctor in Indiana that will confirm whether I am infected earlier than waiting 6 weeks??? Also, do you know the accuracy of this test in detecting HIV for individuals with a known date of exposure???
