Hiv fear after unprotected contact
      #256174 - 06/13/11 06:37 AM

First of all i must tell you that i do not come from USA, so sorry for my bad english.

I come from Europe and my name is Nick, also i am 26 years old.
I have an unprotected sex before ~2 months-(73days) with a woman that her hiv condition is unknown to me. Vaginal, oral and anal. I am very stupid for this, i was drunked but this is not an excuse its a stypidity.
Also i must tell you that i never finished during the contact.

3 days after my unprotected contact i have had headache, fever (for about 3 days), sore throat and Swollen tonsils with white spots.(i still have Swollen tonsils with white spots after ~70 days)

30 days after contact, i have swollen lymph nodes in the armpit, in the groin(two large lymph nodes-diameter=8 cm) and on my neck. All these symptoms keeps until now(duration ~40 days) I do not have pain but you can see my lymph nodes with your eyes.

I am very scared because i think i am hiv+.
I have an anti-hiv test 30 days after contact but the result comes negative because of the short time after exposure.

My generilized swollen lymphs scared me and i feel sure about my hiv condition, i think i am positive.

Can be other STD's cause generilized swollen lymphs?
Also i have darker urine and yellow muccus on the stool. I am scared for Hep c too.

I feel terrible for what i did and i do not have someone to talk, i wiil go for a test in 20-30 days again.

I am very scared and i do not have someone else to talk, the duration of my symptoms terryfied me.

Thank you for listening me.

First of all, use protection. I never always did myself back in the past, but I learned.

It sounds rather soon, in just a couple days, for symptoms to start up so quickly. Everyone is different though, so it's possible. It sounds like you may be just over worried because you are very aware that you had unprotected sexual contact. Let this be a warning to you!

All of your symptoms seem to be related to HIV and some to even Hepatitis B and C. However, they also can be related to a number of other conditions in the world and the majority are curable and don't put you in the hospital. But, you are now in a window period, and that can last 3 months and 6 months for some, but 6 months is very rare. Go get tested, okay? At 90 days from when you were exposed, go in and get the test. You can do the finger prick which will give you results right away. If you choose to have lab work, it will take about 2 weeks (1 week in some places). Don't go for the mouth swab test. It most likely does work, but I wouldn't trust it personally. If you have something in you, it will show up in your blood within antibodies. So, give a little blood to find out your result. Test at 6 months too, just in case. And, buy a box of condoms and keep them with you when you plan on meeting someone for a romanic rendezvous.

Good luck, hope all goes well.

Thank you very much for your answer. (1st of all sry again for my english)
I have some news but i do not know if i must relax or continue nervous.

I have another anti-hiv test (12 weeks-84 days after possible exposure) that comes negative. Is this reliable and conclusive? I hope it is but i do not know becasuse of my symptoms. I still have swollen lymph nodes and sore throat.

Also i was negative in syphillis, Hep B and Hep C.
Ebv IGm and Cmv IGm both negative but Ebv IGg and CMV IGg both positive (as most people have). The curius is that EBv antibodies are to high , i have about 36.

The other curius thing is that in blood test i have a little bit high lymphocytes (42%) and low hematocrit.

What do you say for these results?
Thanks to all of you again.
Nick

I am glad to hear you are negative for Hepatitis B and C.

You are at 83 days, so it may be a sign that the results are most likely negative if you took it and they came back negative. However, it's not that way for everyone. You need to be at least at 90, and at the same, you should also take the test again on the 6 month mark. Remember, it's rare, but for some people, antibodies to HIV infection do not show up until 6 months. If you want, you can test at 3 months, 4 months, 5 months and then again at 6 months.

Do what I do, try to clear your mind, okay? Find something else that will take your mind off of this until you are ready to take the test. Stressing is no good for the body. If you lymph nodes are still swollen, then there is a reason to worry because your body is fighting off an infection. It does NOT mean that it is HIV though. It could be anything.

Swollen lymph nodes = infection. They do not swell because of worry or stress. You could have a cold, maybe a staph infection, etc.

Wait for day 90, since the majority of people have antibodies by that time. If it's negative, then it most likey means you truly don't have HIV infection. Still go again at 6 months though, please. And like I said, in the mean time, don't stress about it. Find a hobby or something to do to ease your stress about the situation.

Good luck, hope all is well.

Adams1 seems to be letting his own fears about HIV take over him while he is himself wondering if he is infected.

The majority of people will test positive by 6 weeks. A negative at that point only rarely will change by 3 months, so a result a few days short of 90 days won't change.

There is no need to test after 3 months, unless you are on immune suppression drug, chemotherapy, or you have a long term IV drug habit. I'm assuming since Adams1 feels so strongly about testing out to 6 months, he must fall into one of those rare categories.

Assume if you wish crabman, but keep in mind that the first three letters of the word 'assume' define its definition quite clearly.

Nickkk, if you read websites about HIV or books, you will find that a lot of them mention 6 months. There is a reason for that, and the reason why is simply because there are some people (remember, it's very rare) that carry the virus but don't show antibodies after 90 days have passed. The majority of individuals normally do show antibodies to HIV before 90 days, so if you test negative at day 70 for example, then it may mean you probably are negative.

There have been some reports of people testing at day 90, and they were negative. Then for some reason, they tested again at 5 months and they were positive, and the Western Blot confirmed it. The point of the matter is, some people don't show antibodies by 90 days, but the majority normally do. It is possible to first start showing antibodies at day 180 too, and any doctor or scientist or person that specializes in HIV/AIDS would tell you that! It's a fact, not a debate. Take the test at day 90, then again at day 180. 6 months goes by pretty quick, and testing is usually always free so it won't cost you a dime.

Good luck, hope all is well.
