Concerned about sweating at night
      #255759 - 05/19/11 12:19 AM

Hi all-I have a somewhat paranoid question and this may be a long post. I am a 24 year old female, I have anemia and hypoglycemia. I'm also bipolar so I take zoloft and lamictal which are pretty strong meds. Anyway, last october I engaged in sex with a man. We were protected except for about 30 seconds he took it off because this guy had a BIG problem keeping himself "up" lol. Well I made him put another condom on because I have a bit of HIV paranoia. (8 years ago I was raped and the man who raped me called me and told me I now had HIV, I got tested and had to wait 2 weeks for my NEGATIVE result. In those 2 weeks I lost about 10lbs and thought my life was over. I was bed ridden with worry and depression) Ok back to the question. About 1 or 2 months after we had sex I experienced sweating at night for about a week or 2. The sweating was underneath my breasts, behind my knees, my stomach and my hair was a little damp. You could say my body was a little slippery. The sheets were damp as well. I would not say DRENCHED at all. Other than this one symptom I had no other symptoms at all. No sore throat, no rash, no weight loss diarhhea etc. Since then I get the same night sweating a few times a month with no other symptoms. Except sometimes I've awakened in a dream or nightmare. My doctor told me that my medicines are very likely the cause of my night sweats. I can't shake my worry and it's starting to piss me off! Lol. Anyone have any input on the sweating issue? I'm concerned about them being ARS symptoms. Ugh!

ACUTE retroviral syndrome occurs between 2-4 weeks after an exposure. Not 7 months. Your CHRONIC night sweats do not fit the pattern.

Sleep hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as the night sweats, is the occurrence of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) during sleep.

What you described is not excessive. Sounds more like its time to break out the spring/summer blanket and quit using the winter one.

Also both medications can cause sweating along with a grocery list of symptoms and side effects that reflect what some people swear are sure signs HIV. Your doctor was correct in thinking it's the meds. I think you just have to many blankets or to heavy of a blanket on your bed.

No matter who is right HIV is not even showing on the radar for you.

Hi, again! Well, you know sweating is a vague symptom and can be caused by a lot of things. There is a "viral syndrome" (fever, rash, malaise) that some people experience when seroconverting. In that case, you might have swollen lymph nodes, too. But listen: You won't know until you know, and until then all you can really do is take good care of yourself. You might look at it this way: If this is your last month or so to be HIV negative, how do you want to spend it? Worrying that you might get HIV? Or being kind and nurturing to yourself?
