If someone is HIV positive how many medications are given? And if someone is exposed to HIV in the workplace will they be prescribed HIV meds for 10days with a refill?

Hi Lady,
I am not an expert on PEP - if I was, maybe I would not be on this forum today, since it was not available to me at the 2nd ER I was at after my MVA, even after I expressed concerns to being possibly exposed.... I do know that the current protocol for many is 30 days, after doing some reading. 10 days, I know nothing about.
Anyway...
I can speak to the HAART treatments for those of us who ARE living with this disease: there are usually 3 drugs used at a time (I will use the example I know well, that which will hopefully keep me going over the next few decades.) This is usually combined as 1 pill, such as Atripla; two pills, such as Truvada + Sustiva and the like; or (in developing nations) as three pills, each containing their branded or generic name.
If he is positive and his HAART is working well, then his viral load should be close to zero, which, supposedly, lowers your chances of being infected by him.
THE BOTTOM LINE: You should NOT be exposing yourself by having unprotected sex with ANYONE, unless you have a long and lasting relationship and truly know yourself, your partner, and you have both been tested several times over a six month period. Any counselor will tell you the same.
I hope this helps you, and I do wish you a safe, HIV- life. If you have become infected, DO come here and we can help you through the ordeal. My thoughts are with you!
