I am a woman and my boyfriend just tested positive for HIV. Ours is a long distance relationship, so the sex was irregular. We had unprotected sex during the course of one year. I was negative in the beginning of our relationship and he was untested. I tested again this past November 23 and my last exposure date was November 5. I tested because on his last visit here he fell with pneumonia (we thought it was the flu at the time) so I worried about HIV. So my test was negative 18 days after exposure. My previous exposure date was September 10, making that test 74 days after this exposure. Based on what I've read, 74 days is pretty conclusive that I'm negative, but it's still not the full 90 days, plus there was the one exposure 18 days before testing negative. What are the chances I have HIV? I plan on going for another test this week and I'm worried sick.

I think you're right. That was my initial plan, but then my boyfriend said go ASAP, then I wondered if I could become sick rapidly. But, I should wait the full three months after my last exposure since it's right around the corner so I don't need to go right back to make it three months if I'm still negative.

If I was in that situation I would probably go to the Dr. asking for a PCR test. This test is different from the antibody test and can show an infection as soon as 10 days after it happened. I would not take no for an answer. Your chances are in your favor that you didn't contract HIV. But of course you need to know for sure.

You're right, that would be a good idea, but the three month mark is only a few days away and I'll test next week. I'm beginning to worry more as I approach the test date and I take some comfort in not knowing just yet.
