Can you catch hiv from this encounter
      #252532 - 10/17/10 11:04 PM

I have a friend who is hiv positive he has been so for ten years but I just found out recently. I have some anxiety about germs in general so I dont shake hands. I always give people fist bumps. But I am growing concerned becasue I gave him a Fist Bump the other day and I had scrathes from pulling these nasty weeds at the house. This was 3 weeks ago and now I have a fever and sweating and a bunch of odd symptoms that I noticed could be hiv. I have NOT had unprotected sex in over a year and have been tested. Do you think I caught hiv in this way? What if the two of us had cuts on our knuckles. Also, I know this is odd question. But If i dont want to be rude is there any way of trying to avoid shaking his hand without looking like a idiot?.... also.. there is some pain in my knuckles would there maybe be any pain if I was infected at that spot and myabe my bvody is trying to fight it? Do you all think I should get tested? Please respond!!!

This is the kind of crap that makes me sick REALLY are you that ignorant I know many places have information on HIV transmission YOU HAD 0 RISK and furthermore maybe your HIV positive friend is better off with out you I mean how insulting (this is your friend?) I would hate to be your enemy. anyway there is no chance of getting HIV from casual contact the only way is unprotected sex sharing needles or a large amount of blood to blood (not some little scratches on your hand either)

There is no reason to call me ignorant.. I have read hiv is tranmitted by blood.. I have a bruised hand now and what if his knuckles are also bruised or cut? I have no way of knowing.. Just like it was not his intent to have hiv it is not my intent to have anxiety.. But I do thank you for your answer.. I am just having trouble letting go..

I'm not calling you stupid, but the risk of you catching it that way is less than 1%. The 2 of you would have to have cuts in the exact same place where the knuckles met and both cuts/ scratches would have to still be oozing and bleeding from both people. Personally I think that if you are affraid that you may have caught HIV from him, odds are you had anal sex with him and forgot to put the condom on in the heat of the moment, but my guess is since he has known about being POZ for 10 yrs that's even an unlikly story unless you drugged him. My bet is you're fine and just looking for an excuse to ditch him, or you know you have done some else risky an are using that to blame for just in case. My suggestion would be to first get tested to calm your mind and then second call you "friend" and tell him not only what you did online, but then appoligize for not talking to him about your fear and lack of knowledge.
