Reliability of PCR test
      #251720 - 08/20/10 06:05 PM

I was hoping that someone could attest to the reliability of the HIV PCR test at 3 weeks. I got tested at 22 days and it was negative, but I have seen conflicting reports as to the ability for the PCR to determine whether a person is positive or not. On many sites, it says that PCR can determine an infected person at 2-3 weeks, but I spoke to a doctor that said this test is mostly used to detect the level of viral load and may not pick up a positive if the virus levels are low. The testing service I used claim that the PCR test is 95% accurate at 3 weeks. Please let me know if you have an educated idea on the accuracy, because I don't see any definitive reports on it. I will of course follow-up with test at 3 months and 6, thank you!

DNA - here are my test results:
HIV-1 Antibody, Confirmation Western Blot <1.00 - Negative 08/16/2010 08/18/2010
HIV 1/O/2 Abs, Qual HIV 1/O/2 Abs, Qual Non Reactive Non Reactive Negative 08/16/2010 08/18/2010
HIV-1 DNA by PCR With HIV Antibodies by ICMA Negative - Negative 08/16/2010 08/20/2010

I received oral from a female escort - I have had conversations with her since where she says she is clean, but who knows whether I am getting the truth. Possible exposure date 7/25. I did a baseline at 14 days for 8 possible STDs and found out I had herpes, otherwise clean at that point.

dude oral sex is not high risk, don't worry about it...you're putting too much thought into it, you'll be fine.you might get other stds from oral sex but not hiv..haven't heard of any cases getting hiv from oral sex so i know you're fine.

If the test is negative highly reliable , all fo 95% and then some ! Problem with the tests today is that their grester accuracy throws out a higher number of FASE positives which will put the scare in anyone . They do not give false NEGATIVE , a PCR negative RNA and even DNA PCR are just about absolute certainty that you are negative . You don't have Hiv without meds and keep a below 48 (undetectable ) viral load , and don't even listen to anyone who says you could be the exception and be what's called an elite controller , which is a person who fights the disease without meds for a long time (years) with no apparent harm , they are sooooo rare to be non existent .
Congrats, just for the shits and giggles get a antibody test at your 3 month mark , that's just the bow on top of your negative package .
