Pregnancy after negative 3 month test?
      #25157 - 12/02/01 05:52 PM

I had a risky encounter a while back (cunnilingus, and brief rubbing unprotected penis against wet vulva, and brief unprotected vaginal sex before putting on condom - with an Asian sex worker of unknown HIV status - in Asia). After testing negative at 5 and 11 weeks, and now waiting for the 13 week result, my girlfriend and I are mulling pregnancy. Is it safe to start trying after I get the 13 week result - provided it is negative? I also tested negative twice for pretty much all other stds. Have had some swollen glands, but really no other symptoms, except a handful of small red dots on my arms and torso.
My girlfriend does not know of the encounter, and I will do anything to protect her from becoming infected. Must I wait for the 6 month mark? Please help!

they say the 3 month test is reliable. BUT will you believe it and be comfortable with it? you may have to wait, ONLY for your peice of mind...certainly not for any other reasons. I had a 3 month test (negative) but that was not enough, i had to test years later. Why? because I am a freak! by the way, my later tests we still nrgative...should have believed the first one and i would have saved myself a lot of time and money. worrying about hiv becomes an expensive habit. do what you have to do to feel confident.

First of all, The data that shows 95% is data from 89-91 and with older generation test. Data today shows 99.9%. Their is no proof that a 12 weeks test is not as good as a 15 weeks test. Most seroconversions occur after 4 weeks. Some data shows 6 month but these data are so few that something could be wrong and the most important thing is That no data today indicates longer than 3 month with the newer generation test that are so sensitive that it will be positive the same moment the antibody production begins. Older generation test with cell-lysate antigen the antibody production needed to be finished before the test became positive.
So you can relax now, a 12 week test is conclusive if it was with a third generation elisa test and the antigen wasn´t cell-lysate because then you antibody production need to be finished before positive result.
Relax now, you don´t have HIV!

Since you've been tested 3 times at different intervals, you're negative. I know how you feel about possibly infecting a loved one, but your encounter, although with someone of high risk, the "what you did" is pretty low. A test at 3 months is >99%. If you need that extra piece of mind, a PCR DNA Qualitative test at this time would put it to rest...if you can't afford that or are not satisfied, and then wait till 6 months...but that will be for your mind, not because you need to. If you're 11 week test is negative, you're negative.

You should test for other STDs that are more easily caught, like the Clap, VD, and Syphilis etc...

In the end you should rely on a MD's opinion...and in the future don't go to prostitutes...it's not worth the mental anguish...

Peace and good luck
Shane...
