Has anyone had a legitimate risk such as unprotected vaginal or anal sex, had all the 'classic symptoms' including swollen lymph nodes and tested negative still beyond the window period?

yes. all the time. just look at all the people who write Dr. Bob with negative test results outside the window period, but still believe they have HIV. http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/SafeSex/index.html
you have not received your test results yet, so please don't jump to any conclusions about your status. also, you tested within the window period, so you'll have to get tested again at 3 months to be sure. but a negative test result at 4 weeks is still encouraging.
your anxiety probably stems from the guilt you feel for cheating on your wife. you're going to have to be responsible and talk to her about it, because if you do turn out to be infected, you're putting her at risk by continuing to have unprotected sex with her.
