Acyclovir - HIV Seroconversion Delay
      #250165 - 04/27/10 08:32 AM

Ok. I did a stupid thing.
2 times oral, 2 times vaginal unprotected intercourse on New Year's eve. no excuse for it....

Anyway, I got a real quick cold a couple weeks in... cleared up within a couple weeks.
a month afterwards, i got a small lesion (which i popped into a napkin) on my penis...

went to doc, got herpes testing..and he gave me a really high dose of acyclovir ..800 mg 5 times a day...
i took that for like a month...
i had all types of symptoms, sore throat, dry skin, mouth ulcers, more genital ulcers (which docs said was not herpes or did not present like herpes).... itchy scalp, eyebrows, numbness in hands and feet, redness in hands...
plus the herpes seems to be spreading... spread to hands ..
either way...i'm confident i have herpes... but i heard that chances of coinfection with hiv are high if you catch herpes at same time..due to hiv shedding on sore?

my question is this...
it is proven that herpes seroconversion is delayed by acyclovir.
i have taken a 13 week herpes test which was negative.
but... since new information has come out saying that acyclovir also inhibits hiv replication... would it not delay seroconversion, as well?

Here is my test history (for HIV)
5 week - hiv antibody labcorp negative
7.5 week - std clinic not sure what type..negative
10.5 week - hiv antibody labcorp negative
13 week oral swab test negative
13 week p24 antigen test negative
waiting on 14 week pcr and antibody test again...

let me know what you guys think.
Do you think I am being unreasonable?
I personally do not think so.
As, the common knowledge was that acyclovir did not affect herpes seroconversioni until just recently, as well...
thanks for your help guys.
man...i really wish i did not take that f'ing medicine.

btw... i took acyclovir starting at first test..
so from five weeks on...
was also taking lots of vitamins and stuff like lysine, vitamin c, garlic, oil of oregano, olive leaf extract...
i know its a lot of sh*t to put in ur body..
but nothing seemed to stop the outbreaks and the feeling of overall sh*ttiness..
my Inf. Dis doc thinks its herpes (w/o confirmation yet) but he also thinks something else is going on.... as it has been constant for 3 months...and it seems to be spreading to different areas...

acyclovir would not effect you HIV testing it is the best med for EBV not shure about its se for herpes. You do not have HIV your tests out to 14 weeks confirm that (YOU ARE ALL CLEAR as far as HIV) Rock on party time

Thanks for the vote of confidence.
I am still not sure, though.
I've been told multiple times that I do not have herpes, only three months later to have my doctor tell me that i do...
so... still a little wary...

My partner "supposedly" got a test for HIV 7 weeks after me..
She slept with someone unprotected... two weeks before me... (yeah... nice choice of partner on my part)....
although i shoudln't judge as i did the same thing with her...
Anyways, that came up as a nine week negative for HIV.
So, most likely negative, right?
dunno..i also dun trust her...hahah. i mean..c'mon..she did give me herpes...
but..the fact that she told me she only had hsv-1 on her test.. when my ID doc says he is 90 percent sure i have hsv-2...
indicates to me..that she did not seroconvert for herpes..and she had a new infection... so... new infection hsv...high viral load...
possible new infection hiv? high viral load?

The only reason my mind went towards HIV again..
Was when I saw the Infectious disease doc..and he was telling me that he thought it was herpes but "something else might also be going on".....
which made my imagination run rampant...
and i immediately got tested again.

Can someone tell me what the cut off is for a RNA PCR test?
What number is utilized to show that I am negative?

Thanks.

Acyclovir does not directly inhibit the replication of HIV. It inhibits the replication of HSV2 which in turn brings the immune system down a notch from trying to deal with two infections giving it time to turn it's attention to HIV and thereby the body has a chance to reduce the viral load somewhat from what it would be while trying to battle both diseases.

Has nothing to do with seroconversion which is determined by antibody production, not the level of viral load (ie: viral replication) a person has. It doesn't matter if a person has an undectectable viral load or one in the millions. If they are antibody postive they are HIV+.

Which you are not.

Just wanted to clear up your misconception about what the Ugandan study and it's purpose, which was actually to see if the use of Acyclovir in controlling HSV2 would reduce the risk of transmission from HIV, which it did not.

But to answer your question:

"Do you think I am being unreasonable?

I personally do not think so."

Seems there's no reason to join the discussion, is there?

Ok.
Thanks to you both!.
got my results...14 week antibody - negative
RNA PCR was < 45...

so.. no if's and's or but's about it....i am negative?
Regardless of acyclovir...if it was supressing... (which Esmerelda confirmed it wasn't....)
i would have a high viral load if i just contracted right?
It wouldn't allow itself to suppress to undetectable this early?

4 months out?
I'm thinking yes.
But, please confirm.

Other than that... i'm pretty pleased.
now i have f'ing herpes to worry bout...

u guys think i should get a six month anyways?
probably will...

U guys do an awesome service to the world.
Thanks for all your help.
i may even stick around this board ...
to take a gander...

Good luck to everyone else.

Yes you are HIV NEGATIVE it would be impossible for you to have no viral load and no antibodies because the antibodies are what would drive down or "suppress to undetectable" your viral load in the absence of anti HIV medication.
