Sharing toothbrushes

Hi all, I keep reading inconsistent information regarding the risks associated with sharing toothbrushes. So I was wandering what the real risk is. Is it zero, theoretical, negligible, low...etc? I'm asking because I had a hiv risk 3 years ago. I tested -ve but, over the last year I've developed several hiv related symptoms. Over the years my kids have used mine and my wifes toothbrushes. Kids being kids they just used them without asking because they'd left theirs at friends during sleepovers. I'm worried that I may have had a false negative test and that I could have infected my wife and kids over the last few years.

Kids will be kids? Never mind HIV, think of all those virus and bacteria that can be passed that way. I certainly can't imagine sticking a toothbrush in my mouth that has someone's morning crud all over it.
If you can afford it, just keep fresh new ones available in case they 'lose' theirs.
As long as you tested at least 3 months after your possible exposure than you are HIV-. The issues with these tests are false postives, not false negatives.

I tested at 7 and 12 weeks with a 4th generation test (I'm in the UK but, my risk was in Germany). But, since these symptoms started 12 months ago (2 years after my risk) I've tested 8 more times (some 4th gen, some rapid tests). I've developed rapid gum recession that doesn't want to stop no matter what my dentist does. I've developed flaky itchy skin on my head, nasel folds and ears; change in bowel habit and I've a horrible thick coating that has appeared on my tongue. I was fine with my original hiv test results and put it all behind me but, these symptoms started and the thought of hiv appeared. Because, my family went on as usual for a few years then I'm worried about infecting them all if I've been getting repeated false negatives.

From what you said in your first post I didn't realize that you have over tested and are obsessing about HIV.
I can understand why you would not want to include your hypocondria issue, however, that is the issue that must be addressed. Please seek counseling to work through the reasons you are obessing over HIV and your refusal to believe TEN NEGATIVE TEST RESULTS. Hopefully you won't drop dead from Cancer or some other disease while you spend you time chasing a disease you clearly do not have.
