HIV Transmission?
      #24748 - 11/17/01 01:45 PM

Being a senior in high school, many times "peer pressure" can get to you. But I have been blessed with good parents and have been a big factor in my growing up. I have never done drugs, never gotten drunk, and have done great in school. I have scholarship offers to colleges. I am sorry for "bragging", but I thought I would give a background of myself.
But last night, something happened to me that has affected me greatly. Since I have not engaged in any sexual activities, I really am not very familiar with HIV and how it is transmitted.
I was at a party last night and was having a good time. Towards the end of the evening, my keys fell out of my pocket and fell into the couch. While looking for them, I felt something sharp poke me. When I pulled my hand out, I noticed that I was poked with some type of a pin or something that is used for sewing. Once I pulled it out, I noticed there was a little bit of blood on my hand where the pin went in. Not a lot, just a little bit. I thought nothing of it. A few minutes later, a friend of mine said that she was reading that someone could get HIV by being poked with a needle. When I asked her about whether she was sure about what she read, she said, "Well a pin is sharp and if blood was drawn from being poked, then you could get it if the situation was right." That really scared me. I don't know how long the pin was there and I don't know where it was or how had it before it ended up there. What really worries me is that a lot of people sat at that couch, and some of them are sexually active and have unprotected sex, which I know can transmit HIV. Maybe I am reading way too much into this, but this really has worried me.
I guess my questions are: Do I have anything to worry about? Do I need an HIV test? Has HIV been transmitted by being poked or cut with a pin or thumb tack?
I have set high goals for myself in life, as I want to go to college to be a lawyer or possibly an engineer. I am saving myself for the right guy as far as sex goes. I just hope that I did not become at risk for HIV from last night.
The reason that I came here is that I heard a year or so ago that this website has a place to go to talk to people who can offer support and give good information and feedback about possible HIV trouble. I am hoping that this is true. Any information or support that you can give me will be very much appreciated from this teen.
I am sorry that this is so long, but once I get started, I tend to be long-winded.

Sincerely
terrifiedteen

HIV dies in 30 min. in air.. And if there's HIV+ people they have to jump and sit on the pin...bla bla bla..chances are soooooo low.. you should worry about "chances of being hit from head by a meteor" :Pp

hey .. just don't worry.. If it's gonna stress you have a test and see the test results are negative..

Actually this is really nothing to worry about hiv does not live long outside the body or in open air only a few minutes in quantity or until the fluid carrying it dries at the longest.
There are several urban myths about this and that could be where your friend heard it from but no-one has been infected from a pinprick this is not the same as a syringe where the fluid could still be inside.
Good luck out there and when you do start having sex please use condoms.
