Unprotected oral is not risk-free!

Hi All,
Technically I had several exposures due to unprotected oral sex, but the most recent one is probably consider the most risky:
1. 1st exposure on 2/28/09 I performed oral sex on a male with unknown HIV status, I did not taste any precum and he did not ejaculate in my mouth.
2. 2nd exposure on 5/22/09 I performed oral sex on male with unknown status (he was tested negative in 01/2009 and have primarily engage in insertive oral sex) - no ejaculation in my mouth but I did let him go deep and his penis has hit the back of my throat several times.
3.3rd exposure is on 6/21/09 I performed oral on a male with unknown status. He did ejaculate in my mouth though I did not swallow, and afterwards I saw a wart bump on his penis.
I know my status have been negative prior to all three oral exposure as I tested negative on 1/21/09 (oral rapid and NAT), and 6/13/09 (western blot). I also did not engage in any sexual activities in 2009 except the three mentioned above.
On 6/23/09 I experienced low grade fever, headache, joint pain, sore throat, fatigue, and chills. Called my doctor and he told me PEP is not warranted as oral sex carries a relatively low risk (this view is also confirmed by Dr. Bob on the forum). On 6/26/09 I went and got tested for gonorrohea, chlamydia, and syphyllis and all came back negative. Still waiting on HIV as NAT test takes a few more days to show result. However, the sorethroat/fatigue/chills remain to this date. In addition the lymph node on the left side of my neck has became swollen and is a little tender/pain when I press on it.
The first few days after the flu-like symptom I'm experiencing, I was extremely paranoid. I simply do not know what to do and the prospect of being infected with HIV has completely overwhelmed my emotion and thinking. Things have gotten better the last couple of days, where I have come to accept the fact that what's done has been done, and I need to wait for the NAT test result and get tested again in 3 months should the NAT turns out negative.
I guess I'm posting here for two reasons: 1) to get support as I've seen so many wonderful members who unselfishly provide their support and comfort to those who experience anxiety during waiting period. 2) To hopefully remind anyone who read this post that unprotected oral sex is indeed, unprotected. After the last risky exposure, I did my many hours of research from credible sources(NIH, CDC)and have learned that HIV can be transmitted during oral sex, in both theory and clinical document. Why put yourself at risk when doing something as easy as putting a condom(whole and non broken) on before engage in oral sex can practically reduce HIV risk to zero? The statistic puts risk of HIV transmission of oral sex to 1 to 10,000. However that doesn't mean it takes 10,000 unprotected oral sex to get infected. If one of my oral sex partners is HIV+ I may very well become infected in one of those three exposures. Almost all the STD clinics I visited told me it's my "personal choice" to have oral sex unprotected. That advice seem misleading now that I've done my research which shows unprotected oral does impose real HIV risk.
My message to everyone is: please use condom/protection no matter WHAT form of sex you do. Safe sex means NO fluid (semen/blood) exchange between you and your partner.
I will keep on updating this post on my test status (upcoming from NAT, and 3 months later if NAT turns out negative). Regardless of my test status, I hope whoever reads this post can learn a little more about what " safe sex" really mean. No matter however much fun it was at the moment, it's not worth the anxiety and stress that comes afterwards. Play safe and you will stay safe!
Thank you all for taking the time to read my post.

NAT test came back negative. I took the test on 6/24/09 so that clears the unprotected oral encounter i had back in May 09. Will retake NAT on 7/31/09.

Not exactly a surprise since there's never been a case of transmission from getting oral in all the decades HIV has been around. Did you really think you were going to buck a 25+ year trend?
But congrats and I hope this puts this in the past for you.

Hi Esmerelda,
Actually my exposure was not getting oral, but giving oral to another man and having him ejaculated in my mouth. According to a study done on gay men in San Francisco they were able to identified 8 of the men who were infected by means of giving oral to another man, and 7 of them had tasted semen or precum. So as you can see the transmission through oral has a real risk and my testing is warranted.
Thanks for your congrats but unfortunately that may need to be delayed, as the NAT test I took was just 3 days after the last (and perhaps most risky) exposure. I plan to go back at the end of July to get tested again. Will come back with result. Thanks for reading my post!

You are correct there is a risk associated with giving oral, but that study would seem to be out of line from what the CDC has determined. The CDC places the risk of giving oral to someone with HIV at 1 in 10,000. So to have that many people reporting that is how that got HIV in one place would seem off.
Of course there is always an issue when using self-reported data and when you say 8 men said they got HIV from oral you don't mention how many people were polled. Was it 10, 100, 1,000?
I would be interested in reading that study. Do you have the link?
I tried to google the study but didn't find it. I did however, find these which seem to say the same thing the CDC says about giving oral. Exceptionally low risk.

In the meantime you might put yourself at easy by reading these other studies that don't

Hi Emeralda,
Unfortunately I didn't keep track of which studies I looked at - I was just so anxious and looked at anything I can, I do remember it was 8 men out of like 102 so the rate was around 8%. However just a quick search at thebody.com pulled a study back in 1996 with SF men. The link is here:

I do understand that oral sex is much lower risk in comparison to anal or vaginal sex. However as all studies demonstrated, it is like playing russian roulette each time- the chance may be small, but not impossible. I'm literally counting the days before I can take the next NAT test. Thanks for the additional links and your comforting words. I'll definitely keep you posted of the next test result.

I seem to remember something about that study. I think it was in one of the links I posted about the only study to show transmission at 7%. I believe if you search a little harder you will find that is not an accepted study and you'd do better to rely on studies that aren't 12 years old. But I know you will do as you will, but I just don't understand why with all the information you choose to focus on the worse.

Esmerelda - I do agree with you that I tend to focus on the worse. I'm seeing a counselor to work many issues in my life, but specifically my pessimism. It's not the best way to deal with life, but I find myself hurt less if I expect the worse. Anyhow thanks for your support - there's no other way for me to settle and calm until I get tested and know the result.

It's been almost 2 months since the exposure, and I've developed a persistent white coating on my tongue which doesn't go away even though I brush it everyday. There are also some creamy white discharge...sounds very much like oral thrush. I'm going to see my doctor tomorrow to see what it really is. My throat and mouth has also been dry and I've been getting recurring cranker sores in my mouth. Something doesn't feel right...I don't think I can wait for the 3 months mark to get tested...

Tested negative today via rapid oral method. STD clinic also drew my blood for NAT test, result will be available in 2 weeks. Canker sore is getting worst, really big under my tongue...I've never had 3 canker sores in a month back to back. Something's not right, maybe I have wart? Tongue still totally white-coated with raised little red bumps.

NAT test (7 wks past exposure) turns out to be negative. I'm so close to the mark, now if I test neg on antibody test on 9/21/09 then I'm cleared.

The risk of HIV transmission from an infected partner through oral sex is much less than the risk of HIV transmission from anal or vaginal sex. Measuring the exact risk of HIV transmission as a result of oral sex is very difficult. Additionally, because most sexually active individuals practice oral sex in addition to other forms of sex, such as vaginal and/or anal sex, when transmission occurs, it is difficult to determine whether or not it occurred as a result of oral sex or other more risky sexual activities. Finally, several co-factors may increase the risk of HIV transmission through oral sex, including: oral ulcers, bleeding gums, genital sores, and the presence of other STDs. What is known is that HIV has been transmitted through fellatio, cunnilingus, and anilingus. _____________________ Get Your 24 Hour Yeast Infection Cure Here

While difficult to measure the CDC has done so. They place the risk of tranmission for unprotected oral when one partner is HIV+ as: giving oral at 1 in 10,000 and the risk of receiving oral at 1 in 20,000, but they also say there are no confirmed cases from that manner. There have also been no confirmed cases of transmission via cunnilingus.
