Please can someone give me their honest opinion on whether this is a reason for me to be concerned and tested? I’m going out of my mind with worry and keep checking my body for HIV symptoms due what I believe my risky exposure.
I’m a 34 year old woman who lives in South Africa were HIV is not really discussed in great depth and status isn’t really discolsed. The only thing we are ever told is that a condom must be used for vaginal or anal sex, but what about safe sex when it comes to kissing and fingering? I did something really stupid the other night and now I’m living with the fear of being exposed. Two nights ago I met a man in a night club who I didn’t know really well. One thing led to another and I let him deep kiss me a couple of times and finger me – there was no oral or penetrative sex involved.
1. Can HIV be transmitted through hard fingering and deep kissing? 2. I don’t know his HIV status, but is saliva a form of transmission? 3. Do you think I need to be tested? 4. What are my chances of contracting the disease this way? 5. Are there any documented cases of HIV be transmitted this way?

Fingering and Deep Kissing are not considered risky activities. In the last 25 years of reporting, there has been no cases of tranmission from fingering and only one possible from kissing and that case had extenuating circumstances.
Neither of these activites are even listed on the CDC PEP risk summary sheet.
Use condoms for intercourse and you will be fine.

Thank you for your reply. So basically what you are telling me is that I had no exposure to the two things that I did with this man? Even though I live in South Africa and it is quite a drastic situation here? Are there any reported cases regarding deep kissing and HIV? what were the circumstances that led to that person contracting HIV? Sorry if I seem ignorant, but I'm not to familiar with the exposure risks and low risks that you talk about. Is there a website I can view all of this? Thank you Katie

I fail to see your reasoning for thinking that living in South Africa somehow puts you at more risk. While HIV is extremely prevelant there, in the case of transmission it doesn't matter where you are. Risky behavior or non-risky behavior is the same the world over. If something is not considered a risk in the US, then it's not a risk in Europe or South Africa or South America.
In the case of your reported activities it doesn't even matter if this man is in fact HIV+. Kissing and fingering just aren't considered risky behavior.
I admit that considering the appalling rate of infections in South Africa the fact you plead ignorance to how this disease is actually transmitted leaves me speechless. Add to that the fact that millions...dare I say billions of dollars have been given to Africa for HIV care and prevention education and I feel that perhaps we'd be better off keeping that money here at home to help our own citizens living with HIV and promoting proper prevention eduction. All those dollars would have gone a long way in the United States.
Perhaps this is your awakening to learning the FACTS about HIV and preaching it to all who will listen in your country.

Esmerelda, can I ask you what sort of experience and training you've had regarding HIV and AIDS? Do you honestly believe that I have nothing to worry about from the exposure I had? I am so worried that I can't eat or sleep and now I've developed pins and needles in my left two fingers. Please help and thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

HIV/AIDS cannot be transmitted through either scenario you described....geographical location has nothing to do with it.
you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that if indeed these were possible ways of transmission, after 30+ yrs of the epidemic, the WHOLE world would be dead from it already!!! How many kisses or foreplay you think happens on daily basis worldwide....more than anyone can guess.
Get over your irrational fears of getting infected by ways, science and society has PROVEN beyond doubt to be impossible

I agree with A2H here. What my background and training is has no bearing on the mountains of scienctific research about transmission that has been done. I could be a HIV/AIDS researcher specializing in transmission or I could be a drug addict, a sex worker, the woman in the cube next to you at work. It doesn't matter because the facts remain the same.

Thank you for your post. I'm a little confused as this is the response from Dr. Frascino to another worried soul.
Are they any recorded case of HIV transmission via the following modes: -Fingering/Mutual masterbutaion -French/deep kissing
Response from Dr. Frascino Regarding your two follow-up questions: 1. No, assuming the skin is intact. 2. No, unless there are extenuating circumstance, such as blood-to-blood transfer due to recent oral/dental surgery.
You both keep telling me that there is no risk involved with what I did, but how do I know for sure that his skin was intact. Have there been any reported cases any where in the world regarding the transmission of HIV through french kissing and fingering? I'm sorry if I keep going on and on about this, but it's really got me worried. I now have continuous headaches, feel naseous all the time, sore neck and pins and needles in my left hand. Are these a sign of HIV symptoms? Please help.

Since it is obvious you plan to obsess over this, there is only one thing you can do. Get tested at 3 months. I hope at that point you will believe the fact you had no risk.
In the meantime there is nothing more I can do for you.
