Does early treatment reduce viral set point?

If you test positive early enough, the doc offers you to go on HAART treatment. The idea is to use the drugs to get a lower viral set point, and maybe you can go off the meds after awhile. Has anyone got any solid information on this? Does it work? I'm trying to get my partner to go for testing and I need a good reason cause he says there's no use in knowing anyway.
