Early HIV symptoms?
      #24218 - 11/05/01 10:37 AM

I've had weird symptoms for the last month (more intense the last two weeks).

They started with itching and then came a huge headache (constant with front and back of the head), pain in my neck, a little bit of diarrhea (gone now), a white tongue and a general sense of fatigue.

I took some antibiotics, some ADVIL and some Vistaril. My blood work is not showing anything in particular and I also got tested for the common STDs: clamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and everything is negative.

I am concerned this could be related to HIV. I had a one night stand with a woman 6 weeks ago. It was protected sex but I did give her a cunnilingus and we kept using the condom after I ejaculated.

I took an ELISA test two days ago and I am waiting for the results next week.

Could these symptoms be related to something else that my doctors have so far missed?

If it's another viral infection, it's pretty strong because I can't get rid of it.

Does anybody know the statistics for the ELISA test showing antibody after 5 weeks?

Are there any other test that I could take (RNA PCR, 3rd gen antibody test) that could relieve my anxiety and rule out HIV?

I have a full physical exam scheduled for next week.

Thanks.

PS: I know this is more than stress related symptoms because I have never felt anything like this before.

I don't understand what it means by the fact that you kept using the condom - why should that have an effect on the protected sex? I don't believe there is a documented case of HIV transmission through cunnilingus ... i doubt you'll be the first. As far as tests are concerned ... it's probable that the Elisa you took was a 3rd generation. Also, with your VERY low exposure, I don't think there's any reason to take a PCR. But, if you have $350 to burn and it will ease your anxieties - go get a PCR/DNA today. call Quest Diagnostics.

Thanks for the info.

To take that PCR/RNA test, do you know if I have to do it through my doctor or if it is possible to have it done anonymously by going directly to a testing center?

Do you know of a testing center in San Francisco that performs this test?

Thanks.

If you're in San Fran .... well, that and New York are on top of their game! If you want ..... you can lie about your exposure and call the Options Project in San Fran. Basically, if you tell them you had unprotected receptive anal sex (with someone who is pos.) and you're experiencing symptoms ..... you'll get a free PCR and p24 antigen test. Granted, it's being dishonest, but it's the only way you'll get it done for free - if you tell them your exposure ..... I guarantee they WILL NOT accept you inot their free program. On the moral side of things - I can't say it's the right thing to do - but hey, you'll get a free PCR by a group that is studying Primary HIV Infection. Aside from that, call Quest Diagnostics.

Thanks for the advice.

I just talked to the woman I had this one night stand with 6 weeks ago and she got checked for HIV two months and half ago and again 2 weeks ago and in both cases it turned out negative.

My last test at the end of September was negative as well and I will have my results on Thursday for my test at the end of October.

That still does not mean that we are both negative but only that we don't have to worry about possible exposures anytime 3 (6) months before our last test which also means that any exposure in August, September or October could still be converting.

It's really scary to have to wait with these symptoms (headache, a little bit of fever, itching, neckache) that are still here (3 weeks now...).
