Hello,
On the night of June 23rd I had sex with a random woman. I put on a condom when I went inside of her but after I came and pulled out, the condom had broke. The whole act lasted maybe a minute at the most. How much of a risk did I put myself in?

Hello Mikey,
Congratulations on having had enough sense to use a condom in the first place. You can NEVER underestimate how important that is in this age. Coming to your question though, the fact that the condom broke while you were inside her puts you at risk. However, the odds of infection per exposure are 5 to 10,000 for insertive vaginal penetrative sex. Add that to the fact that you gave yourself protection (no matter how minimal) and you do not know the status of the woman,I am sure you will be just fine.
Your exposure does warrant testing though so wait till 6 weeks and get an Elisa. That should give you a strong idea of what your status is before you test again for the conclusive one at 3 months. Some will tell you the one at 6 weeks is conclusive as most people who are positive will test so by then.Meantime, try not to frieck yourself out and ALWAYS use protection everytime you have sex. I know that for a fact because I am in my window period too after having had protected sex with my HIV positive girlfriend (who didnt know her status then). While that does not sound like a risk,I am not too sure whether the condoms were intact after sex as the room was dark everytime we had it. I will go and have mine done after 5 days as I will have clocked 3 months post exposure. Keeping my fingers crossed for both you and myself.
Goodluck. ----------------------------------------------------

Thanks! I will pray for both of us that we will be fine in the long run. Did your girlfriend have any symptoms? I know symptoms are very very unreliable in determining who is and is not infected. I only ask because I am getting worried about my stomach. I am starting to have a few red bumps pop up and I can't tell if it is the beginning of a rash or if it is from me sweating at work (I work outside in the heat doing landscaping and I sweat alot and the fabric I wear is heavy and doesnt beathe easily) or if they are flea bites from my cats or if they are ingrown hairs. I used Nair for men on my stomach hair two weeks ago. They don't itch. Other than that though I have not experienced any other symptoms of ARS.

No. My girlfriend did not have any symptoms whatsoever. In fact she is the kind any Jim and Jack would like to bed at first sight! She only found out as part of her regular health checkups otherwise she looked and felt healthy in every sense of the word. As you can imagine, she was gutted.
I have not had any symptoms either. However, about 2 days ago,I noticed a swelling on my thigh which is a bit red. Just a small swelling though. But then again, this is way beyond 10 weeks post exposure and ARS symptoms don't occur this late.I could test today and get a conclusive result as I am on my 83rd day post exposure but I want to wait till 90 days so I can put this to bed once and for all.
As you have correctly pointed out, symptoms are very unreliable in HIV diagnosis. From my calculation, you are around six weeks past the incident and though ARS symptoms occur around 2-6 weeks post exposure, they rarely occur outside that time frame. Secondly,if you are to seroconvert, the symptoms will usually occur all at once and not a rash here and a red bump two weeks later.
Considering the job you do,I wouldn't be surprised if the red bumps turn out to be nothing more than an occupational consequence. My gut tells me they are. Otherwise, you really don't have much to worry about though you will need to put that mind to rest by testing. You know how our brains work!
I hope this helps. Take care of yourself and remember,a stitch in time saves nine. Use protection. Thanks for your prayers and good-luck. I hope we won't need the luck though! ----------------------------------------------------------------

Mikey,
The risk is relatively low, simply because you were the insertive partner and the condom offered some protection. Albiet this does not mean testing is unwarrented. Yes, you need to test for HIV and other STD's...BUT the risk of acquiring HIV from the episode are quite low and chances of you testing negative high.
Good luck

God Bless you
Stay Well
