Acute signs?
      #240107 - 06/23/08 05:11 PM

Well about a month in a half ago i was seeing this girl. We had sex about 5 times with a condom, oral sex for about 20 seconds with out, one time i guess you can say "i dipped myself" in her once for about 5 seconds.

II had a sore throat with a white coating on my tongue so i was worried sick. I went to the Dr about a 2 weeks ago and got tested everything was negative. They told me my sore throat and white coating was from acid reflux because I have excessive burbing and a past of throwing up.

A day after my results. I had diarrhea that last until 5 days and now havent had a bowl movement for two days but i have excessive gas. i can feel my stomach doing strange things but really not bad pain. Ive been depressed lately and very tired i lost about 15 pounds in about 3 weeks.

Im constantly itching especially my armpits. and im still having problems with my throat where i need to be drinking water constanly.

How long should i wait to be tested again? I understand there are different ways to be tested and one that detects the virus which can be detected with in a few weeks? Is there a way i can be tested that way?

Yes, you can get a test that looks for the virus itself and not the antibodies. The test is called a PCR test but they are very expensive and they have a history of giving false positives. The next time you should get tested is at the 3 month mark. Any test taken after 3 months is considered definitive and conclusive.

That I am not sure of. But remember, symptoms do not equal HIV. The only way to tell if you have HIV is to get tested at the 3 month mark.

So where are these PCR test offered? Hospitals? Clinics?

Are there any types of programs you can sign up for to cut the cost or is that just for the regular blood test?

RASH

This morning i noticed a small rash on the left side of my wrist about 8 little red marks, my younger sister noticed them too when I asked her to take a look at my arm. About 30 minutes later the rash is gone. Is this something I should be worried about? Also I had just finished cutting the grass, perhaps it was some type of allergic reaction???

Guys I am so stressed right now. 2 months is a long time to wait for a 3 month test and then another 3 months after.

Deep down inside I feel like I am infected. I dont even want to continue going to college. I feel like I should just get a full time job and start working.

Well now. Have you been enjoying the drama?

Let's get down to basics. Where exactly was your risk for what you described in your original post?

You had protected sex. The CDC doesn't even bother to list PROTECTED sex on their chart of risk estimates for transmission of HIV.

The CDC's risk estimate for UNPROTECTED sex (the real thing, not dipping) with a woman with HIV is set at 5 in 10,000.
A whole five seconds of 'dipping' doesn't count. So I don't see any risk in your PROTECTED sex or your dipping.

You got a blow job for a whole 20 seconds. Could have been much longer. The CDC sets that risk with someone HIV+ at .o5 in 10,000....or to round that to a whole number: 1 in 20,000, but the fact is there has never been a confirmed case of transmission from getting a blow job. Studies have shown saliva inhibits the virus.

Here is the entire list from the CDC. Table 1.

Estimated per act risk for acquisition of HIV by exposure route. All figures are based on risk per 10,000 exposures to an infected source. * Estimates for risk of transmission from sexual exposure assume no condom use.

Blood Transfusion 9,000
Needle-sharing 67
Receptive Anal 50
Percutaneous Needlestick 30
Receptive Vaginal 10
Insertive Anal 6.5
Insertive Vaginal 5
Receptive Oral 1
Insertive Oral 0.5

It would seem pretty dumb to drop out of school over this. You might 'feel' you are infected. Lot's of people do, but if we all were diagonised by how we 'feel' I imagine there'd be a lot more people running around with dire diseases...

Imagination is a wonderful thing, until you let it run away with you.

If you really must test for peace of mind, then do so. ONCE at 3 months, no more.

But until then, please calm down before you drive yourself to distraction.

hi,

Well, if you used a condom then you shouldn’t be worrying much about HIV. Symptoms do not equal HIV disease, however, there should be an exposure for one to consider this possibility, in your case where is it?

The symptoms you report, I guess are more to do with other things than HIV.

Good luck

Its so hard not to think about it since

i lost so many pounds, My sore throat with white tongue although they say the white tongue is not a sign of acute state but can be at times. I had diarrhea for about 5 days but then i was constipated for 5 days. and feeling itchy

The girl I had sex with went to get tested Monday so Im waiting on the outcome of that.

hey man
I can't add much to that was said already
but I just wanted to add: I had a full white coated tongue (its true! you can search for my username a few months ago when i was super worried) in the 'window period' and after several bloodtests past the 3 month super-long super-conservative window period I'm hiv negative.
I got a white coated tongue for the first time in my life about 2.5 weeks after the 'risky experience'... I thought 'it just gotta be hiv!' and one doc suggested the same as yours, that acid reflux can cause that. Of course I didn't believe him much... now I do.
Just thought i would let you know that

oh. I just read everything. there is something that i can add after all hehe
The CDC and Dr. Bob Frascino (my hero <3 haha ) say that 3 months is the time that you should wait to get your HIV test.
I won't counter that. I did that myself to have peace of mind. 3 months is the magic number (of months :P )
Nevertheless, if you can get a 4th generation elisa (antigen + p24) , that is non-expensive, you can get a test at 6 weeks and have a reliable 'preview' of what your 3 month result will be

california. nice. okie I'm like nowhere near ya BUT, its california. you sooo gotta have 4th gen testing around. If not near your city, then in san francisco, that its like ground zero for hiv.

the way to ask if the lab test you are calling to offers 4th gen elisas (because to me, the hospital did offer 4th generations, but the lady that picked up the phone didn't know about elisa generations and so on. The people that performed the test yes, but the lady that picked up the phone, no.) :
ask for an elisa that screens for antibodies AND p24 antigen

Actually the p24 screening is the one that makes a 3rd gen elisa a 4th one.
http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/p24/test.html

the p24 gen appears before antibodies, and it starts fading away just when antibodies start appearing. You can read more about 4th generation tests here

time to do your homework.
