Concerned about exposure time frame & OHL (Oral Hair Leukoplakia)
      #238867 - 04/29/08 06:47 PM

Hello
I've been very concerned lately because 6-8 months ago (could have been as early as 4 months ago) I noticed a small white spot on the side of my tongue. Initially I didn't think anything of it and thought it was something that I ate or a change in my diet. I researched this and understand the oral thrush can be a cause but it doesn't have the same characteristics. I do have some white on the inner cheeks that rub off without any pain/bleeding that mainly accumulates in the morning. I don't smoke and did drink heavy on occasion 2 times every other week. I do have fillings and noticed that when I sleep that my tongue rests or migrates on the side that this white spot is. I don't have the best oral hygiene but can't understand if this would be a cause. The other side of the tongue is clear and does not have any white spots or spot.

The white area/spot which is approximately 1/4 inch and can not be easily removed unless its pinched with my fingers and a bath towel. I've noticed that even when I partially remove this it does come back however this area has not grown in size over this duration. I was wondering if OHL (Oral Hair Leukoplakia) does grow or increase in size within this time span of 6-8 months? I've read that it can vary in growth depending on your CD4 count and can disappear on and off.

I have read that it can show up in early stages which is rare? I know this is only information however from what I've gathered but it states that the initial detection of OHL the individual will develop AIDS within 24-36 months.

Does anyone else know if there are any other symptoms that would associate with this? Or even have OHL show up at a max of 10 months or possibly earlier? I've read different conflicting reports that it mainly shows up with a CD4 count of under 200 however it can show up as high as 500 or more. If I do have a low CD4 count would I have any additional symptoms?

I'm also concerned since I had unprotected vaginal sex approximately a year ago which is where I came up with the time frame of 6-8 months later of the white spot. I noticed initially after 2-4 weeks I had some allergy/cold symptoms such as running nose, headache, run down, etc. which really concerns me. I know I need to get tested however I am really concerned and would appreciate any input.

If the white spot (OHL?) seems to show up 6-8 months later is this possible if one was to contact HIV? I have had no other symptoms such as diarrhea, weight loss (in fact I believe I have gained weight), no loss of appetite. The only thing I noticed is that I have had some inner chest pains around the area were my heart is. The pain is not overbearing but more annoying. I've eliminated heart burn since its off center and my diet doesn't consist of any spice foods or any foods that may cause this. I did have strep throat 3 months ago and ask the doctor about the white spot on the tongue and see stated to go see a dentist and get a biopsy. After medication the strep throat went away within 48 hours.

Thank you for the input

The only way to know is to get tested.

sorry if its not the input you might be looking for (since I'm not a Doc and know little about your exposure), but
GET TESTED ASAP!!! is the only way to let your mind in peace and let you move on with your life.

much love and light,

worried,

ARS symptoms occur 2-4 weeks post an exposure, and not so late! Moreover, ARS symptoms manifest themselves through multiple symptoms and not a single symptom!

Having said that, using symptoms as a tool to diagnose your status is inappropriate. I would advice you to get tested ASAP, a test now should be conclusive, as i assume your exposure was 3 months ago or earlier, based on the your account...

goodluck

Ravi
I understand however I did have ARS type symptoms 2-4 weeks after possible exposure however they were mild (no high fever or rash). I've read that most individual have some type of high fever and rash which I would have recalled. The exposure would have been 1 year to date (late April of 2007). I don't recall the symptoms lasting more than a week however I could be wrong.

My question is more directed at the post ARS symptoms.

The OHL or Oral Hair Leukoplakia (which is not an ARS symptom) seemed to show up approximately 6-8 months later. I don't have any other symptoms other than anxiety and stress but as I mentioned before I'm not sure if OHL would show up this early. From other forums they have mentioned its not likely however from what I've researched its one of the first signs for initial AIDS development and can show up with individuals having a CD4 count under 500 but mainly 200-250. After this the individual would have a 80% chance of developing AIDS within 31 months.

I'm trying to ask if there are any other symptoms that would associate with OHL.

Thank you for your input

OHL is extremely difficult to diagnosis. If you haven't seen a dentist and had a dentist tell you that you have it, then you probably don't.

To date: 12 years and no OHL and my CD4s haven't been above 350 in about 5 years. Matter of fact I don't know anyone with it.

I didn't see if you tested or not. But if you haven't, then what you need to do is stop this guessing and just get a test. If you have tested at least 3 months past the exposure, then just put this behind you and go see your dentist about your oral health.

Esmerelda
Thank you for your reply and input. I agree I need to go see an oral specialist. Regarding OHL and judging by your user name (female) OHL is very rare in females from my readings. It seems that it shows up more in males.

It's not a dentist you need to see at the moment. I don't see where you said you have tested and you didn't bother to respond to that at all.

So straight out. Have you tested? If so, how long after your exposure?

If you haven't tested don't you think it makes more sense then chasing OHL?

The fact that you resist talking about testing leads me to believe;

a) you have tested negative at the proper time and refuse to believe it.

b) your scared to have an actual test done and would rather drive yourself nuts with all the guessing games.

Worried one,

I doubt those were ARS symptoms, as two major components of ARS were missing, fever and rash!

Maybe you can disclose more on your exposure perhaps that can help a bit! Anyway, using symptoms as a tool to diagnose your HIV status is inappropriate. Testing is advisable, and instead of poking your body to find out various symptoms, why not just go ahead and test and end the conundrum??

Good luck

Thank you for the feedback Ravi. I understand but then again it was a year ago. I'm sure their wasn't a rash as you mentioned and no fever (at least it wasn't high enough for me to remember). I did remember I had allergy symptoms within that 2-4 week time frame.

I'm more concerned about the OHL or what it could be. Others have mentioned that its unlikely that's its OHL since it would not show within 6-8 months. I haven't found any symptoms.

Esmerelda I have not been tested yet and your right I'm worried about possible results especially with this white spot on the side of my tongue and the reading I've done on the net.

Dear Worried one,
please, don't you panic, get tested by the way
I've been exposured about 11 weeks (oral sex) and felt almost all the symptoms (not fever, nauseas and rash) but I'm scared too. I still got stomach pain and headache going on
But I already did two tests (one and two months after). I'm gonna repeat next week and after that too but you have to face it (for worst or better)
Let us know about your status, ok?
Take care
