White cell count
      #23812 - 10/25/01 05:40 PM

Here I am at 29 days. I tested for HIV a few days ago, but will not get results until Monday. I tested now because I have had a sore throat and swollen nodes in my neck for the last 2 weeks (no fever or aches, but no cold). Today some test results came back: no hep, no mono and normal blood workup. I assume this includes white cell count.

My question: if these symptoms were ARS would I not have elevated white cells. I thought the lymph nodes produce/store white cells. If the HIV test is negative it should tell me these are not ARS symptoms because the symptoms started at least 10 days before I was tested.

I guess I am looking for some comfort that my normal white cell count means something as I have 4 more days to wait for the HIV test.

A CBC test would include a break down of the various white blood cells and a normal number is a good thing. When ARS hits, the WBC count will initally be low as the virus takes the body by surprise. Then when the body starts to fight the virus, the WBC count shoots up above normal. Eventually after it's all done, a balance will come back. So, to answer your question, yes, I think so.

I'd like to address a couple of things that you mentioned. First, I hope a doctor diagnosed you. Many people *think* they know what swollen lymph nodes feel like and where they are located when in reality, it's not true. I encourage anyone who thinks that they have swollen lymph nodes to consult a doctor to be sure. Unless you have been trained in the medical profession, do not try to determine that you have swollen lymph nodes because you can definitely be wrong. Also, swollen lymph nodes can mean nothing. The lymph nodes in the body(neck, armpits, groin) can swell at ANYTIME. It could be a small scratch on your hand or a scraped knee. The lymph system is very complex and it's job can best be described as delivering white blood cells and taking away the dead bacteria/infectious materials after the WBCs have done their thing.

Your symptons do not sound like ARS. Fever is the #1 most common sympton and a very large majority experience one. Your two symptons don't sound like ARS. It sounds like you have a sore throat(maybe some bacteria there) and the lymph nodes could be responding to that sore throat.

I'm sure that you are fine and whatever you are experiencing is not ARS. Good luck on your test and let us know when you get those negative results. :-)
