broken condom
      #23773 - 10/24/01 08:30 PM

What are the risks if a condom breaks, and contact was only for 1-2 seconds before withdrawal. My contact was with a sex worker and the condom broke. She heard the breaking sound and quickly withdrew. Hence 1-2 seconds. I asked her later if she always used a condom, and replied that she will refuse sex if a client does not want a condom.
Any comments appreciated. Thanks. KL

I'd say you are in very good shape and at low risk. First, you were wearing a condom. Excellent for you! I know that it broke, but given your limited exposure and that the CDC has stated that majority of condom breaks do not result in infection, you are in good shape. Additional pluses here. The fact that she told you she always uses condoms is very good. Also, there's a 1 in 500(1.7 in 1000 actually) chance that if you were not using protection and she was HIV infected that you would be infected. Finally, it is harder for a female to transmit HIV to a male than it is for a male to transmit to a female. Put all of this together and you have a low risk encounter for sure. I wish I could tell you no risk, but the only no risk encounter you can have is no sex or masterbation. In short though, you should not be freaking out over this and if you continue to worry then consider taking a test at 3 months to be completely sure. In the meantime, be completely safe with whomever you decide to have sex with just to be safe, but you're ok and I would not torture yourself over this.

Striker speaketh the truth. The odds are astronomically in your favor, so in my opinion you should focus on the test as confirmatory rather than diagnostic: you're gonna be fine, and the test (yeah, you need to take it)is only going to bear that out.

Thanks. I am confident that this episode is low risk. I will test at 3 months. Just to be sure, although I do know what the results will be. Thanks again. KL.
